We have a 2012 XC60 D5. Within the first few months of owning it we noticed that it would make a loud clunk when shifting into Drive. It doesn't happen all the time but more often that not. It doesn't matter whether the engine is cold or warm, from a standing start or when shifting from reverse to Drive. We have it serviced at the local Volvo dealer. Since day one they tell us that upgraded software will fix the problem. When we get the car back it seems okay for a while but then the clunk comes back. Back for another check up or when next service due and the same old story, the software upgrade will fix it. Last service I asked them about it and again they said the software would fix it. Got the car back and the clunk was there almost immediately. Took it back getting quite frustrated with them and the service guy tells me that this latest software is the bees knees and will fix it once and for all. I met this revelation with some scepticism and he kept reassuring me it would do the job, to the point where he was getting quite short with me, sensing my frustration with this ongoing problem. Anyway, it's back again. I am bringing the car back in next week and I was hoping for any advice or similar issues. What is causing this and why can't they seem to fix it? The car is just on 85,000 k's old.

@jonbot Any ideas? Do these come with a tf80-sc?
jonbot
Xc60 is tf80
Not heard of anything personally
The XC90 used to get loose in the CV shaft splines into the front hubs, makes a clack noise
A more solid thump I'd say is probably gearbox being somewhat rooted, if nothing else is borked

More Rear diff issues then anything else at my end

Sounds like they are putting you off so they font have to fix it properly.
Maybe a second opinion?

It's odd that they aren't having a deeper look at it. Maybe offer them a week with the car to get a better feel for what is going on and a chance to diagnose better? Consumer law and warranty should certainly in have it in their court to fix.

Thanks for the advice. Back to the Volvo dealer today. Finally, they agree that it must be something more than a simple software upgrade can fix. They have sent off to Volvo for approval to cover the cost of a replacement gear box.

That's the ticket. Good stuff.
