Hello all,
The 244 makes a rattling noise from gearbox area when engine is idling and car in neutral, and clutch is up. When clutch is down, noise goes away. When A/C is engaged, noise is louder. When I give the engine a little gas, noise also goes away.
Input shaft bearing? Please oh please not let it be that! Haynes manual does not cover it!
If so is there a simpler remedy apart from a large repair? Could changing the oil and adding oil stabiliser help for now?

Keep your foot on the clutch! Every manual 240 I've had does this & I always figured it was the less than smooth idle contributing to a little layshaft chatter or some such.

Imputation shaft bearing is easy
Remove trans
Remove clutch
Remove flywheel
And its held in via a circlip made of wire
Also replace the rear main seal while there
More Likly is that the release bearing is on its way out
Whatever it is... Your pulling the trans

Thanks for replies. On my way to work I stopped off at a friends workshop to let them have a listen. His view was that the input shaft bearing was worn.
However, he actually advised not to fix it; his view was that in current state car could last a long time, as the car drives fine and it isn't too loud. He reckons with the given mileage once the box is out I might find all sorts of problems, or create them.
He suggested changing the oil and looking for metal in what comes out. If no metal hurray; if there is metal it might be time to reconsider options.
