Volvo 940 16V GLE 2.3 EXTREMELY RARE - No mot | eBay
posted this, because of the engine in a 940
I have a 940 here with the same engine
B234 engines were available as an option from 1988 to 1992 - up to 1990 in the 740, and the 940 in 91/92.
The latter version had an hydraulic timing belt tensioner - the B234 I picked up from Woolongong years ago was from a 940 and it has one.
Only 8 left on the road in the UK now? Wow.
Thanks Ledfoot, I learnt from your post.
I have an 89 B234 engine with a manual timing belt tensioner which I'm collecting from my mainland shed next week. When I get it home, I'll compare the 2 engines and see if an auto tensioner will fit on a manual tensioner engine - internet rumor says not, but there don't appear to be any extra holes in the later engines. So, we'll see.
I have owned Inga, my 1990 740 GLE for 10 years and she has a B234F motor. Built in Belgium in April 1990 and shipped to Australia.
If memory serves me correctly there are two different auto tensioners as well as the manual one. Mine is an auto one.
Here's a good shot of the motor from when she was being painted last year.
anyone put a turbo on one of these engines?
Be interesting to see the results.
B204FT and B234FT exist in LHD European markets, particularly Italy for the B204FT as there were tax breaks for 2.0 engines.
^ There isn't any factory 2.3 litre 16V turbo, they were all B204 engines. FT engines had a cat; GT engines didn't.
Apologies - I thought there was.
Give a two months and ill be able to answer that ;)
(p.s yes it has been done a sh!tload of times, look up 16v+t on the turbobricks fb page)
As you said earlier / somewhere else, it was a tax thing for capacity - 2000+ cc got hit with a bigger tax.
Factory B204FT / GT engines were in Italy's 780 and Euro market 960T.
And the UK market 960T got the 2.3 turbo.
