It is not a caliper brand issue.
First thing I would suggest is to ensure that it has been bled properly- all of those bloody bleed nipples are there for a reason!
I would also check that the caliper pistons are moving freely, the distribution block on the front crossmember hasn’t dropped its load, and the master cylinder is working properly.
The pedal will have more travel than newer cars, but should firm up through the travel and provide excellent stopping power.
