Good evening Ozvolvo.
I bought my first volvo a few weeks ago, a 92 240 GLE. It’s in reasonable nick overall but not without its flaws (external paint and trim mainly). I don’t have much experience with old cars as I’ve only bought new cars over the last 20 years.
I really dig this car and I want to slowly restore it without spending silly money. I’ve joined Ozvolvo and a handful of facebook groups and have been reading and learning as much as my little brain can handle. It’s spent the last week with Joe at Lupica Motors for a good going over to make sure its mechanically sound for a little while longer.
I’m starting to work on the exterior and wanted to ask your advice:
1. Black tape under the windows. Its not terrible but the straight edge is a little nicked and there is some fine cracking. Should I replace it or try and spray it with something like Plasti dip?
2. Black paint or tape around the windows. There a a few small knicks where the silver is showing through. Again, can I just spray it?
3. Its missing the left rear corner moulding that sits on the bumper. I’ve seen various chrome pieces for sale but not the black one I need. Does anyone know where I could get one? If not, what are my other options?
4. The black rubber strip that runs the length of the car on the middle of the doors is intact but slowly crumbling. Could it be sealed with some sort of paint? What about the new stick on strip from IPD? Is it any good?
5. Rejuvenating the black plastic bumpers. What’s the best go for a lasting black? I know there are various dyes but I’ve heard people have had success spraying it with plasti dip.
6. Lastly, I need to get the bonnet resprayed. Can anyone recommend a panel shop in the Penrith NSW area?
I think that’s enough questions for now but I’m sure there will be more as I work my way through the car. Thanks in advance.
