Hi All
2013 XC60 D5
So for about 6 months my XC60 had been going into limp mode - usually after shifting from reverse to drive. However this would clear after I pulled over and restarted the engine.
Then a few weeks ago the engine light came on, with a message engine service required, the car going into limp mode again. This time a restart wouldn't clear it (does clear after it has sat for a few hours).
Got it booked into my regular mechanic. Fault codes came up with issues with the EGR, but nothing specific. After doing some looking around, they said that the EGR would need replacing or servicing (was very dirty). Since a new EGR valve was going to cost over $1000 with limited availability, they suggested sending it of to be cleaned.
This happened several weeks later (mechanic is always busy). They got it all back together and tested it - said the fault didn't return. I collected the car and the fault reappeared after a few k's on the motorway.
So the mechanics says to replace the EGR valve - I said I could try to source one from overseas to reduce the cost, which he agreed with.
I'm not a 100% sure of which valve I'm looking for, so looking around on some UK Volvo forums, the EGR issue seems to be common. I feel that replacing the valve assembly would work, but I also get the impression that replacing / cleaning the stepper motor would solve my issue for a lot less $$$.
Has anyone had any experience doing this? I've looked for videos on youtube, but the UK ones, the engine (euro 4) seems to be a different layout?
Considering the mechanic is closed until the 10th Jan, I'm keen to have a go at servicing the Stepper motor myself. Anyone have any experience doing this? Have a video or diagram to follow?
Also any other advice on fixing this would be appreciated. It seems to be a common enough issue (which the mechanic had never come across before - Euro mechanic (not volvo specific) who has been good with all previous issues).
Thanks
