jrhendo I’ve just found that one of the Welch plugs in my 240 rally car is weeping. Of course it’s the rear one: least inaccessible. I’ll replace the lot since I have to pull the engine to access it.So my question is: what do you seal them with? I’ve seen them sealed with what looks like araldite. Anything better?
VolvoHordz Permatex from-a-gasket no.1 is what I have recently used after rearching it a bit on various forums. No idea how well it will actually work long term but it does list freeze plugs as one of its applications.
jamesinc I use Permatex no. 1 (actually I've used no. 3 in the past with good results too, but no. 1 is the better choice).I think Stag or Permatex no. 1, whichever is easier to get hold of.
Roinik An old-school method is to find the oldest tin of zinc primer on the shelf, do not mix it, carefully open and use the zinc paste that you spoon out from the bottom of the tin.
Philia_Bear Silicone bronze mig brazing would seal it for sure and still allow for the plug to blow out if freezing https://youtu.be/wPI_XNCrES8Its specifically rated for brazing cast iron to all types of steel
jrhendo I thought it was humour when I read it. I just wouldn’t do it.I've read about tapping the block and screwing plates over the plugs but even that’s a bit extreme for me. Maybe my attitude wold be different if I’d ever had a plug blow out.
