Plan is to build a B6304 powered 9xx rally car. I have been working on the assumption that the only real mechanical differences between the bodyshells are:

a) the 960’s IRS (vs the 940’s live axle);

b) the 960’s wishbone front suspension (vs the 940’s control arm and castor rod);

and

c) the different wheel offset (960 = +46, 940 = +25).

However, a bit of fiddling yesterday has presented a few questions:

Does a B6304 from a 960 bolt straight into a 940 body shell? More worried about firewall clearance, etc. Does the 940 steering column bolt into a 960 body shell?Is the steering rack the same between the two cars?

Being a rally car, stuff like heater hoses and ABS modules are not an issue.

The starting point cars are a 91 940 or a 96 960.

The irs in the 960 is better

The 940 shell can be made lighter

The irs stuff from a 960 can be transplanted into a 940 (either first or second gen)

I documented most of what your asking in the tentacle wagon thread on turbobricks

The i6 with auto or m90 manual bolt into a 940 with zero fabrication required

The 960 crossmember and rack will bolt into a 940

The rear a arm mounts are spot welded so they can be pulled off the 960 and re welded to a 940 to run the superior 960 front suspension on a 940 chassis including being able to run huge brakes etc

With aftermarket ems and stock cams, t6 behive springs and BMW m52 aftermarket headers with a good exhaust you can tune it to about 190kw at 6900rpm with a rev limit of 7200, it will take serious abuse with that setup for years reliably

Also.... why do you want the 940 column over the 960 one?

Iirc the column is not directly swappable because of differences in mounting but knowing your fab skills I don't see it as an issue for you

960 column has the height adjustment, making it heavier, more complex and harder to put steering quickener in.

You aren't interested in keeping it redblock like all the VOC rally cars?

Are you doing a whiteblock to be different or because you believe it will be better suited for rally?

    Not interested in spending the money to get the power from a Redblock. The I6 Whiteblock has nearly 50% more power with no/minimal weight penalty.

    Currently thinking of starting with the 940 bodyshell.

    I have a bunch of Falcon Snowflake wheels that are the right size and are strong enough for rally use. They are +6 or +10 offset which will fit with 940 suspension bits, probably won’t fit on 960 suspension. I have both a Cressida IRS and HiLux live axle diffs with appropriate ratios but it looks like the HiLux conversion will be the easier one. Brake conversion on the live axle is easier. One of my 940s has manual window winders!

    I reserve the right to change my mind at any point. ?
