Just as an update - I took the car to Paul Whyte Automotive - general vehicle servicer.
They diagnosed a loose drive shaft nut. Said this can happen when a bearing goes but saw no evidence of that. The drive shaft nut was pretensioned to spec and now drives like new.
Cost was one hour's labour.
