Hey there, I recently purchased an 87 240gl in a metallic blue green color code 642. Does any one know the name for this code?

I’m pretty sure that’s one of the colours used on the locally assembled cars, they used Nissan colours in those years, Nissan called that colour Night Glow. I don’t know what Volvo called it but I have the 1987 Volvo Australia sales brochure somewhere, it might be listed in that.

I've searched via Google for night glow and no reference is made anywhere to it. The Nissan color for code 642 is a blue that was available in 79. This car has the 6 in the Vin but is a 12/87 complied car, so I'm unsure on country of origin. My local paint guy has no idea... I've not seen another in this paint.

Is the paint code just "642" or is there a number after that? (e.g. 642-1)

Try logging into volvo tips.com, has a forum on paint codes

The Aus assembled paint codes are usually preceded by CLR...so if you Google CLR642 you’ll see it coming up, especially for Nissans as @DCW242 mentioned. Just google “Nissan CLR642”...see what comes up.

And yes, your car was locally assembled - you can tell by the VIN plate with the hand-stamped paint and interior codes and build date. Most 240s pre-1989 were locally assembled...and that VIN plate is a dead giveaway.

In addition, there will be a thin strip of metal with a body number on it spot-welded to the inner guard just behind the battery tray...only the local-assembled cars got this. Have a look - will be sitting below the coil and power steering reservoir.

Fantastic resource if information available here, brilliant.

Thanks guys, just ordered some paint. Need to get it rwc then swap In the LS1.
