It is a bit fiddly but can be done with carpets out. A donor car for the cover plates, fittings and replacement carpet would be helpful as there are two holes in the tunnel over the rear axle.
From memory there is a switch on the rear of the instrument console (fuel gauge) to re calibrate for a single sender.
Google should reveal the fitting guide for the second tank accessory (or the green book manuals) which will highlight the bits required.
I removed to replace a leaking hose once but left it in as the range was fantastic.

Thats my problem i must have a crack in a hose somewere as when i fill it right up it dumps fuel for the first 100 km.

It would be simpler to replace the leaking hose.

To be straight about it, to remove the top tank you will be replacing the two hoses that break with the single tank hoses. Just replacing them is probably easier than faffing about removing the tank. If you cannot do it your local Volvo specialist will be well versed in replacing them, they all break. I did the 3 way hose (filler neck, main tank and top tank) on my 740 when it arrived as I was told it was broken. I later learned there is another smaller hose that also breaks, so that needs to be done some time soon.
The 3 way hose is available genuine, not sure on the breather hose (a 90 degree bend hose).
