240 1977 244 Engine Swap

Hi Guy's

I have a 244DL 1977 model and having issues getting her running. I don't really want to giving up on her and considering an engine swap.

Anyone done a swap?

  • Out of interest, what problems are you having?
  • Engine will start but idle very rough, touch the accelerator and it would die. replace fuel filter, both fuel pumps and coil. Coil was getting very hot.when I replaced the coil she fired up and was Reving up thought I finally had her. Put the car into drive engine stalled.

Has been the same very since

  • Have you dealt with the degradable wiring?
  • When was it last running? k-jet setup? They aren't all that complicated when you get to know them.

An engine swap is guaranteed to be more effort than just getting it running nice.

  • That was my thought. Sometimes the fuel pin in the k-jet fuel distributor can get stuck with varnish, especially if it has been sitting. That will limit the amount of fuel added when the butterfly is opened or the idle control valve is opened.

I’m in the middle of swapping all mechanical and electrical from a 93 240 donor car into my 79 245GL that had been sitting for about 20 years...so I’m going from Kjet B21E to LH2.4 B230, and doing a manual swap at the same time. It’s a bloody lot of work, but being retired means I have the time even if only a couple hours a day between coffees LOL! See my thread here if you’re interested:
  • I had it running a couple weeks ago for 2-3min, then put her into drive the engine stalled.

Have been unable to get her to stay running

Further to the above, if the car has been sitting the fuel tank could be full of rust, as was my 245GL and also another one I wrecked that had been sitting for about 10 years. I recommend having a look inside your tank.
  • Will do!
  • Well the car is running. Fuel distributor had blockage on 3 cylinders and fuel pressure regulator was stuffed.

It’s currently getting the final few things to get road worthy, front Caliper was seized and 2 cracked tail lights so far.

New tyres go on tomorrow then fingers crossed this week the car will be ready for the street.

Big call but I am making this car my daily, I have wanted to drive an older car for a while.

This is the first time I’m going to be driving a project car.

  • @Brant good work! I also have a dream of driving a 240 as a daily. So far I have 4 X 240s and none are registered or roadworthy! One day...

As a daily ?you better look at every thread on here that is pertaining to issues and look at fixing it before it breaks as tow trucks every week or hour spent chasing issues ain't fun.
  • Yes, it’s with a Volvo specialist. He gone over to make sure is safe & reliable!

Let’s see how that works out!

It's because of the car was not being used on a daily basis that these issues were created

@Brant whereabouts in Australia are you? If you do have any more issues just chuck a post up, a number of us here daily K-Jet 240s
  • Need to say thanks to the generous advice and information offered.

Just about on the road, still haven't had the opportunity to wash and clean, very sun faded.
Once the work is complete I can give the paint a cut, polish and start working on the rust in a few spots.

    Again thanks!8dw0suwo6522.jpeg
