Hi Guy's
1977 244DL B21 EFI
I seem to be chasing my tail and need someone with better mechanical knowledge to point me in the right direction.
Car has been sitting for a number of years, emptied the fuel and refilled with free fuel, replaced the fuel filter. She would start and idle very rough, touch the accelerator and she would die.
The plugs where getting very black, and coil was getting very hot. Tried a mate coil car fired up and was allowing me to rev and had her running and reving put her into gear the car stalled. Would not refire!
Figured the fuel pump was an issue and knowing the age I replace them both the intank and external pumps.
Still cannot get her running, can get her to run but back to very rough. And very difficult to get her started!
I figure I have had her running and it did rev up that compression is ok, I don't have a comp tester!
When I have had her idling i have sprayed around the engine bay to see if there are any vacuum leakes and to car didn't rev up.
I have read that the B21 with it type of injection can be very temperamental on fuel and vacuum pressure
IDEAS?

iceton1975
could be warm up reg or fuel distributor issue had same issues on my 245L 1977 had to overhaul it all
CRACKERS
I had the same problem in an early 244 .It turned out to be the ignition distributor
volvodriverman
Or a rusted fuel tank

Thanks guys! All ideas to look at.

OK this is still ongoing and I am at my end point with this engine!
I have replaced all the major vacuum hoses
Replaced both Fuel Pumps
Spark plugs
Fuel Filter
New fuel and old was removed
Replaced the Intake Manifold Gasket
It will start and idle, idles rough with some adjustment i can get it to idle well. Try and apply any throttle and it dies or will shake it's head off and will not increase it's revs.
My next step would be to replace the injectors and retainers
Just an expensive, exercise!!
IDEAS??
Ex850R
My 78 did similar, sometimes it would drive but get hot and it would dies.
It was the big rubber bit under the in let mani.
The fuel distribution bit. Unless you pull it out it won't be obvious if it's cracked.

Yes I have been told it’s a possibility. Not sure about the cost.
Issue is it could be
Fuel Distributor
Fuel injectors
Retailers
Head gasket
And the list goes on
I just don’t have the gear to test

@Brant you in Sydney? I have some K-Jet parts on the shelf at home if you want to try swapping parts around before throwing more money at it.

Hey I’m in Brisbane, thanks for the offer.
Not really sure what to do, I really need to know what the issue is. I’m just chasing it at the moment.
Thank very generous.

When I had this issue it was a couple of problems the main one being the rubber fuel distribution block.
It took a good indie volvo shop to search it down.........
So, replace it all or take to a shop.

Have you checked the timing? Also, if you spray a bit of start ya bastard into the engine while it's idling does it pick up and run easier or does it die?

Ok,,,,,,,, after you have been told about all these fixes and money spent I would pretty sure want to test the fuel dissy.
So this is what i want you to do, lift out your injectors and with hoses attached then run the fuel pump, you should have no fuel fuel leaking from the injectors. Then with a 3mm allen key fitted into the adjustment hole lift the sensor plate and see if injectors start to spray, the more you lift the more fuel should be spraying also with a nice atomised spray. If it is hard to lift you have air sensing plate stuck or most likely the fuel dissy plunger scored or rusted. If you dont have a allen key then remove the rubber bellows and lift the plate, BUT BE AWARE the bellows are old now and can split easily which hard getting harder to find. I hope this helps with your diagnosis on the fuel side issue.
