My little run about is now finished and due to family concerns no longer has a home to go to (built for my young cousin for her to learn to drive in, she moved to Sydney so all off).
It is a 1974 144, factory injection and auto were removed and replaced with a dual carb B20 and 4 speed M40 (from a 142). The dual carbs have since been replaced by a Weber - which is much better on all fronts! IT has factory A/C (probably dealer fit really) which works well as it was just regassed. Leather seats which are super comfy, though they are a little cracked. Original floor mats and boot mat. Looks very original and includes some hail damage. It has 128,000 km on it which seem genuine, it is in great shape for a 45 year old.
The list of items completed for the 144 follows:
A/C gas, R12 replacement.
New clutch cable (genuine)
new clutch cable firewall plug (Skandix)
240 brake conversion, 164E rotors, 240 callipers etc. Story in Volvo Club magazines.
4 new brake rotors (Genuine fronts/Brembo)
4 new brake pads (Bremtek front, others rear)
Stainless steel braided brake lines (4 fitted, 2 need to be fitted)
Indicator lens (Skandix)
Speedo drive seal in gearbox replaced
Fully rebuilt 40mm DCOE Weber, 34mm chokes and custom jetted for engine
K&N air filter modified for Weber flutes (Weber Performance 16mm flutes)
Lynx cross over manifold
Electric fuel pump fitted
New washer pump (Skandix)
K&N air filter for oil separator
Front crank seal upgraded to neoprene seal from felt.
New sump gasket (genuine)
4 x wheel bearings
4 shock absorbers (KYB I think)
New thermostat (genuine)
New hoses (genuine and Skandix)
Cooling fan replaced (second hand)
New engine mounts (iPd)
New gearbox mount (iPd)
Clock modified with internals from a clock in a 240. Works well, is quiet and keeps time.
New spare tyre strap (iPd)
Plugs, leads, points, cap (NGK, Skandix leads, Bosch points)
All belts replaced (genuine)
Upgraded alternator from 35 to 55 Amp unit (Original SEV Marchal - A/C means Bosch will not fit - I tried!)
New solid state alternator voltage regulator (from Germany)
Rear main oil seal
New pedal pads
Front bumper modification to make it less big (see pic)
3 new uni joints (Hardy Spicer)
All new fluids, gearbox, diff, brake, corrosion preventer coolant, everything.
Stainless steel rear muffler
The AM radio still works fine. While it is cute to have it working, it gets really annoying as there are not many AM stations left in Melbourne. RN is the least bad, silence with a hint of Weber intake sound usually gets it.
Left on the list to do:
Replace window scrapers
Repair seat belt warning flasher
Replace carpet
Replace front end with spare and new joints/rubbers/bushes
Wheel alignment (was waiting for new front end to go in - it drives straight now)
I had planned to fit an engine from a late model 240 (B230F), fuel infected, super reliable, the works. Though as Gab has left town and will not be back the engine project has lost momentum and motivation. The more I look at the numbers the further over 5k it goes. The Weber was 1k, brakes were 1k, rego 1200 (had to have the period specific plates!). Pretty sure the rego is until July, no stickers make it difficult to tell.
There is a spare front end with everything to rebuild and then swap into the car (which is a lot simpler than it sounds) which is available. It does not really need doing, though would look better and last longer afterwards. All of the steering joints, suspension bushes, new backing plates for the brakes, loads of bits. Think I ordered new diff trailing arm bushes too - again they do not need doing though doing them means they are good for another 200,000 km. I need to work out what the suspension order cost, everything was from Skandix and iPd.
It is a pleasure to drive, $ is the offer, that will get close to covering cash costs, the labour was mostly enjoyable and so will not pay for that 100-200 hours. It was designed and built as a no expense spared car as it would be kept in the family for years. Shame it did not go that way.
I would like it go to a good home, it would be a shame to waste all of the work that has gone into it. I use it as a daily drive at the moment, which is not a lot of driving, though it starts really well with the Weber, runs all day and does not use much fuel. It went out to Daylesford last week and happily sat on 100km/h on the freeway/highway, it was a little less comfortable at 110 though did it and would do it for hours. Discovered along the way the odometer still works.
The car is in South Melbourne and can be viewed at South Melb or Caulfield South. If in the Volvo club it will probably be at he club meeting next week. Paint is original save for some repairs near the passenger rear door.
btw: If you search there were (and probably still are) some pics and stories of previous owners on OzVolvo forums somewhere. It came from Canberra from a guy who was planning to go 'fully sic' on it.
Questions welcome.
And the old ones.
