  • High Mile D5 Engine Reliability?

I'm looking a purchasing a 2007 Volvo XC90 D5. The car is in good condition, however my only concern is that the car has 316,000km on the clock. How reliable are the D5 engines with these amount of kms? Are there any problems I should look out for?
Thanks,
Jack.
We have two D5 engines, both with over 300,000Ks. they have been excellent, they run perfectly and still get good fuel economy. we have changed timing belts and tensioners, serpentine belts, and alternator clutch pulleys, mainly as preventative maintenance. So far the only issues we have had is a leaking rocker cover gasket and a faulty power steering pump.
Swirl flaps and actuator motor arms break and destroy motor , get them changed.
DPF can clog , take it off and clean out.
Auto needs close inspection and fluid changing.
etc

Maybe a slow death if you dont maintain the system. Its BMW that drops the flaps into the engine with terminal results.

The flaps on the Volvo can break and drop in, just far less often than they do on the BMW

D5 at 300k

The t-belt will need doing again soonish...
EGR stuff/throttle body will need cleaning (or just do it now) if not done recently
Boost hoses like to pop
Swirl flaps will need cleaning if not cleaned recently
DPF may be near dead and can be "bypassed" easily

We own two d5 models, v60 cross country 2017 with last of the 2.4 d5 ford derived engine and an S60 D5 2011 sedan and both have been pretty reliable. The S60 has only had in tank fuel pumps fail and melted wiring plugs replaced with the Volvo repair kit available and the alternator clutch pulleys and AC compressors don't seem to last long. Auto transmission fluid changes every 60k like peugeot recommend with same transmission the tf80sc / am6 and touch wood haven't had any issue with that either. Gearbox shifts as it did brand new. The v60 had an axle seal leak so had to remove transfer case to access and repair that and an exhaust temp sensor fail but that can happen on any modern diesel. The 300k S60 D5 has never leaked or used a drop of engine oil but the v60 cross country uses about 1/2 a litre of oil between services.

Does anyone own or recommend the v40 d4 with the new vea 2.0DTT with the 8 speed auto, was thinking of upgrading the high mileage S60 to a v40 but after good reliability and economy from the d5 wasn't sure whether I should stick to a d5 In an older v40 or the new Volvo in house 2.0 4 cylinder d4 twin turbo.

The d4 motor that is mated to the 8 speed is a good set-up
