Hey all, so I'm finally at the point there are a few cars on the market and I'm getting the money to invest in the volvo world. Selling some crap lexus I bought to go to work. So I guess my goal is to own an 850 and 240 but just not sure in which order.
I need to have something first and foremost that will get me to work with no no issues so I'm tossing up what to get first.
My Volvo path I pictured will be 850.. 240.... S80 V8 (noting that there is a good one available but I need the classics first), I do like c30 t5 which and s60r but they're much lower on the list. Or should. I go the 240 first than the 850?
Thoughts please, thanks !!
Have a great day all.

It would seem to me that your first choice will be whatever of them you first find in good condition and at a reasonable price. Once you have your reliable 'get me to work' car, then you have the luxury of looking around for the next one. And if the next one needs TLC at least you'll have #1 to rely on and get around in.

940, cheaper than a 240 and a better daily.

Fair enough guess that make sense too hah. Thanks :)

A 940 takes away the grunge of a 240 you may S well have an 850 which is better by far than a940....

The 850 wishes it could be half the car the 940 is. Wrong wheel drive? Fragile, east west, difficult to work on engine? No thank you!

Tell that to the time of 850s still on the road. FWD also isn’t the problem you think it is.
Just get the nicest one of either that is in your budget

Rubbish.
Age old twaddle.
An 850 will outperform any older ovlov comprehensively.

What are your intentions with the builds? Restoration, track, fun road car, stancenation-cambergang-undrivable thing??
BigEd
Just get by daily if a turbo minimum mods but just to get around in a Volvo is prob the main point

They're newer, so obviously more will be still on road.
We here in Australia typically don't have patience for older cars (general public: dentists, doctors, teachers, lawyers), even when they're better. Unless motoring enthusiast owner

In all areas except for time spent in the workshop.

Once an 850 or *70 has had its wear parts replaced oit lasts another 15 years.
Only the front struts need further attention, as do all fwd cars. .
Again, an 850 is going to be a much more competent car and even out handle the old bus if you cared to try it out on a track..... Fwd or not, it's such a competent, well designed platform.
Obviously awd is better but has its own drawbacks.
Go forward to newer designs like awd of P3 and you are talking a similar jump forward to design capability the 850 had on the early platforms.
This is common sense and quite clear if you care to take rose coloured glasses off.
Take the epenis out of this , things become clearer....
Good chat.

Ok
It's not that bad.
But a 940 is better.

Ahhh the people living in the past. How's your Nokia 3310 going? There is massive difference in how the cars handle and IMPROVEMENTS with development. The 2 liter super tourer S40 was faster around bathurst than the V8 supercars the same year and held the lap record. How fast was the 240 turbo around bathurst again? That's not even a fair comparison with the massive power advantage the turbo 240 had over the n/a S40... a diesel XC60 would out handle the 850 let alone the 940 and the design of the 850 was more performance orientated than the 740 chassis ever was.

Michael

Ok mike are we strictly talking about lap times? Because if we are, why are we discussing volvos at all? This website is not called volvoracingmods.com
It seems like all you're interested in talking about is speed, and handling ability.
Now rally, different matter entirely and the car to have in this case is a 240 they are far superior to anything else on the track
BigEd
Should I throw one in the mix and wait for a 242gt as a daily? Hah
ramrod
If you don't mind that they are all manual and expensive, goferit
Ex850R
@Spac may beg to differ on the s40 rally front I expect....

I would say get a 240 of any description @BigEd.
I like 240s for their simplicity, reliability, and sleeper status. Sticks out from the everyday cars you see and that’s what I like.
I’m a bit bias tho cause I only have experience with 240s ??
