  • Wanted - Redblock cam shims

How do you guys place shims you need? Advertise here or buy from ipd/kg trimning?
Quoted shipping from IPD for ~6 shims equates to about $34 would you believe.

First time doing this, but I believe I need a 3.75, 3.70, 3.80, and 2x 3.65
Try berry's or a wrecker
Rent the IPD kit, that way if a couple are close (but not perfect) you have the right shims and Robert's your mothers brother due to perfect valve clearances
Check price at FCP Euro as well? Another option anyway.
I have a big compartment case full of used shims, measured, marked and cleaned. I should have all those sizes I think.

I don't bother with new ones as I've found that even really high mileage ones still measure exactly the same as the factory markings on them, when measured with digital verniers.

The only catch is they're at my parents place and I may not be there for a week or two.

That’s great to know for future reference Angus! :)
Sort of on subject. How often should they be inspected?
5 yearly or 100,000 kilometrely

Or when changing the cam
Thanks guys. Angus, I will message you shortly.

Not generally required on the 8 valve redblock engines unless replacing the cam.
I buy from fcpeuro. But also precision international sell them and they are 4.50 each.
Q. How often should they be inspected.?

Good question- if you hear ticking that’s louder on some valves than most others.
Generally speaking as there is 8 shims maybe 3 might need a slightly thicker shim.

Have come across the odd rattler where a lot thicker shim was required.

If going the whole way you would remove the cam and buckets and replace the cushion rubbers that sit on the top of each valve, and dampen clicks between valve stem and bucket. These are inexpensive.
From what I've seen, those hushers seem to not last long at all and be a waste of time...

When I got my head it had ~10000 km of use after a rebuild. Iirc 2/8 hushers were still intact, the rest had either disappeared or fragments were still intact hanging lifelessly of the stem. I haven't bothered with new ones given above.

More of the same story with the other two heads I've disassembled, though they were original with high mileage I presume.

What gives?
Will be interesting to read a variety of people’s experiences with the synthetic rubber cushions/ absorbers/ hushers.

It’s certainly distressing to see mangled brittle ones. Figure there good for say 5-7 years use before the temperatures their exposed to harden them and therefore useless.

After replacement it’s a good feeling of a job well done when the valve train is quiet again. And the cushions play their role in this.
