After cleaning it up, it sat in mum's shed until July 2018, when I finally got it shipped down to Daylesford where we live.

And painted with some satin black paint. Looked at can afterwards and it said "not for automotive use." Oops, my bad.

Came out ok with the usual run here and there. Looks better now with a second coat.

I have some rust forming under both rear windows of my wagon where the drain holes are. If they're blocked, how does one fix them? Do the windows need to be removed?

You can see the drain holes by looking up from where the spare tyre is and on the opposite side in the same spot using a mirror after removing the trim panel. The hole is fairly easy to access on the tyre side. You might be able to carefully stick something up thru the hole to clear it if it’s blocked. Repairing the rust properly probably requires removing the windows.

Hahah...yes the north facing windows including all bedrooms already have tinted special glass...however we put some frosted tint on the master bathroom windows. Came out ok...I will never tint car windows again after this experience. I learned a lot and saved probably $300 though!

Got the left side rear quarter tape strip stuck on today, so now the rear window could go in. May wait as I think I need to come up with some sort of internal trim piece to cover the C pillar. Not going to buy the exxy plastic ones from a late model wagon...may make something up with thin aluminium wrapped in black vinyl? Food for thought.

Patched up the rust hole on the right side. Stuck a metal plate on the underside with polyurethane adhesive sealer, then bogged it up.

Got the bog sanded and primed the whole ledge below the window. Once it’s dry I’ll sand it back and apply a top coat, then the black tape can go on. Hope the repair outlasts me! Guess I should drill a new drain hole somewhere in the ledge...not too close to the original rust repair though.

Got the top coat on the window sill. Used some old non matching yellow paint but doesn’t matter as it will all be hidden by the gasket and blackout tape. Will let the paint cure for a couple days before putting the blackout tape on. In the meantime I can paint the RH side B and C pillars black and finish up the tail lamp wiring.

Got the RHS pillars painted black. Used the same “not for automotive use” paint as the finish came out so well on the LH side. We’ll see how well it holds up.

Also painted the 245GLE badge for the tailgate. Painted the whole thing black then sanded back the face and clear coated. Not real happy with it but it’ll look ok I suppose. The problem is it wasn’t perfectly flat so I had a hard time getting the paint sanded off the front of the lettering, and it looks like the ends got sanded back too much and a bit rounded. Now working on painting the front door trims black to match the rears. They’re coming out ok but the fabric section is really crispy now with the fabric paint.

I used a satin finish vinyl paint for the vinyl on the door trims and the centre console hard plastic as the gloss finish was too glossy. Using the remainder of the gloss paint for the fabric bits as it doesn’t really make any difference there. I guess the door trim looks ok but IIRC the rear ones have a chrome strip and of course the fabric isn’t jet black as it has a bit of grey in it. We’ll see how they look together and if necessary I’ll black out the rear door fabric. This vinyl paint seems to stick well so I may bite the bullet and do the tan leather rear seat I have from the EV...need a few more cans though! I wonder how long it will take for the fumes to go away?

The leather is best done with a kit or it may just fl a ke off and ruin it for further re-colouring. Or put a seat cover on it.....

I recently got a leather dying kit from the UK for the 265, it was around £100 plus shipping. I’ve only used it for test areas so far but it works very well. I’ve tried that dupli color vinyl paint on leather and it seems to crack pretty easily, it works well on solid panels, I used it to do a black headlining in my 240 and it worked well but on flexible panels it doesn’t seem to last long.

Thanks Duncan. Before I do anything I’d like to see the results of your kit. I did spray the vinyl paint on a couple sample pieces of leather and vinyl and it seems to stick well even when flexing the material...not sure long term though.

This is the kit I got, I’ll try and get some pics of the results but it might not be for a little while since there are some other jobs to do first.

Does that kit have repair fillers as well?

I looked ages ago at doing this on my old 850R seats that I had kept from the wreck , they were pretty good anyway.

Got the tail lamp wiring spliced together yesterday. Closer look at the tail lamp lenses...looks like at least one needs replacement - time to google (unless anyone has a good set sitting around - particularly the RH side)! :P

Also installed the rear door panels. Waiting for my folks to arrive from the US (via NZ) on Tuesday as Dad is bringing a set of small 93 240 wagon rear door tweeter speakers. I thought I could put those in the front door panels where the window winder crank handle hole is to hide it. Whether I hook them up or not is another story as I’m not sure whether they can be hooked directly to the front speaker wires or whether some sort of cross-over is required. It will be good to have Dad here for several weeks to help on the project. He’s more motivated than I am so maybe things will move a bit faster (as long as we don’t kill each other!)

Had visitors from South Australia on Fri & Sat. Craig R, Chris A and Ken B brought over Ken’s (ex-Lance Phillips) 121 wagon...Lance’s sons are planning to do it up. I rode down with them Sat to drop it of in Berwick, had a nice lunch with Pam and Lance’s son’s and got to see Gus (Pam’s greyhound - same colour as our whippet Penny). Pam said he’s missing Lance. :( Craig is taking home the ex-David Raynor 242GT that he and Lance bought for spares. Looks a bit too rough to bring back to life with a lot of rust. Always good to catch up with the Volvo mates!
