With those KLMS, don't flush. If it's never had a transmission service then every knowledge base I've been able to read says not to flush once a fair few KLM...

I used this in my last drain and fill about 5k ago. I agree, the box is behaving quite well so far. I also get the minor hiccup on a hot day when going up hills. I still need to do my mounts though. I confirmed last week that they are pretty average and have probably never been changed - car ticked over 188K last week. I found this Kit on FCP - Part #: KIT-P2MMKIT2P5. What are the reviews on the Hutchinson's brand?

Hi Steve @kwahodi, I was following your post. Two years have passed since your first transmission fluid drained. How many Km's since the first drained. No issues with the tranny? Are you going to flush it at 50,000Km?

How did it go with pcv oil trap, no issues when replacing it? Any advises?

Hutchinson is considered OEM though some would argue. The genuine mounts don't have any identifying marks that match the aftermarket ones so difficult to tell. Most people on other forums seem to like the Hutchinson product. The top mount on the crossbar will give the most immediate relief for harsh up/down shifts unless the lower one is really chewed up.

Local supplier Sandwood was carrying genuine 'box mounts with Volvo scraped off and re-boxed by Swag for $65 last year.

Only one fluid drop and top-up with Nulon on our 2006 XC90 2.5T and the 'box is transformed. Just ticked over 190K. It's good sxxt.

If you want a more OEM alternative, but prefer to pay a lot less... The Toyota Type IV (or WS, depending on transmission) is basically the same thing as the OEM Volvo ones...but is a lot cheaper. ($42 / 4L). I used it on my 2004 2.5T twice (changed every 100k kms)before I sold it with 295k km on the clock - with a lot of towing - and it never missed a beat. I use the WS type now on my current MY2013 XC90 D5 and its pretty much in good shape.

That's some good news! Supposedly both Toyota type IV AND Volvo 3309 are both produced by Mobil: aka Mobil 3309, available in bulk 20 L fairly easily.

Your story is especially useful as hearing failures approaching 180-200K without fluid changes, clearly fresh fluid has kept your tranny going well beyond others I've heard of. Hoping my Mobil 3309 changes at 20k intervals means the tranny outlives the rest of the car.

I'm personally unsure why people are toying with Penrite (which I love for 7 year green and motor oil) and Nulon tranny fluid when both Toyota Type 4 and Mobile 3309 are the same as the good Volvo "genuine" but are available for DEX3 prices.

The Nulon I use makes the transmission behave and is synthetic. The best of both worlds.

On my 2000 non turbo V70 I ran Nulon for exactly 100,000kms on an original 5 speed auto transmission to 350,000kms. Whenever I replaced the fluid in that car every 30,000kms it was not black.

On our 2006 XC90 I used Genuine Volvo fluid. It was average

If you want to SAVE the transmission if there is already some damage, use Nulon full synthetic.

If you want the BEST protective advantage use Nulon synthetic.

BTW I don't sell the stuff or work for them.

Yeah, I initially did 2 drop and fills within a month of each other. Its been more than 50,000,kms since my last drop and fill but I will do it again in the next service which is due in about a month. The tranny has not had a single issue during this time. No flare up, no harsh down shifts etc. Has been all good. Did a long road trip to the Grampians fully loaded last month, through the hills to Halls Gap - round trip of 1,200kms from Gippsland. It was a pretty hot day (39 degrees) when we went to Halls Gap and I was half expecting the tranny to start hard downshifts when it heats up but I was pleasantly surprised when it did not happen.

I'm hesitant on doing a full tranny fluid flush on a car that's done this kind of mileage - 238,000km on the clock now. Just in case I dislodge particles in the tranny which causes issues. What's your take on this? Happy to continue with my drop and fill every 2nd service for now.

PCV oil trap replacement went well. The oil trap was pretty bad :(. Fully caked up with sludge - this was causing the idling to be pretty erratic among other issues like high fuel consumption etc. Checked for blockage in sump as well just to be sure. Been good so far. Its not an entirely difficult job to do but it can take some time. I think I just followed the video that they have on FCP :)

I understand the reluctance to do a power flush type fill ( till clean fluid comes out - how to's on the net ) as it may have contributed to high mileage box failures but its not conclusive either wait can fail...

What you might do then is drop and fill , go around the block , D&F , drive about , D%F again till it comes out clean and you are safer?
