Other option is to find someone who uses "hychill" refrigerant. It's LPG based and is suitable for the older R12 setups and will perform better than r134a. It's also not an ozone depleting gas so not a huge problem if it leaks.

I have the Hychill in my 91 240 and it works fine I.e. gets cold but it does freeze up on the freeway so I have to manually switch off (cycle) the A/C rocker switch. May be an issue with my system. If you have the rotary dial adjustable A/C switch then it would be fine for sure.

What year is your 240?

I have the rotary dial in my model, does anybody have contacts for A/C specialist with Hychill?

I spoke with Berry motor Group this morning and they advised me to upgrade the receiver drier too, is this necessary? They also mentioned that i should install an extra fan for city driving but I don't really do city driving.

That is what you need to adapt to the modern service port connectors.
Berry's advice is correct for retrofitting to r134a
The receiver drier is the filter for the system and it's always a good idea to replace but I guess getting some gas in it and checking that everything functions as it should would be the best first step you can always add a fan later

They’re down in Moorabbin so may not be to convenient, and you’d need to call to see if they have Hychill. Pretty sure Berry’s or Voldat would know where to take it for Hychill.

I had Hychill Minus 30 in my '92 wagon for a little while. It was great, but the system would freeze up if it wasn't hot outside (like Carnut222 says), which is inconvenient when using the AC to defrost the windscreen. It blew a hose and leaked out, and now I have R134a in there. It still freezes up on occasion. I have a fan on it, and it really does make a difference in traffic.

I need a recommendation for a good aircon reliable service in the Eastern suburbs. The aircon on my old mother's 240 keeps on breaking down. We had it replaced twice or three times so far in the last 20 years. There is a leak which they have been trying to fix in the last 20 years. Each time they "claim" they found the fault, or change it, we get slugged with a $500 - $1000 bill.

@tissueboxonwheels regassed 2-3 times in 20years is relatively normal.
If it's an original R12 car with the York compressor you can't really eliminate leaks due to the r134a gas having smaller molecules. It leaks out the seals as they're not designed for the later gas.

So I've lined up a visit to Total Automotive Products in Dendenong for an A/C regas and new receiver drier.
They offer a really good service in A/C, from servicing right the way through to complete installation.
I'll let you know how my visit goes on Friday.

I now have A/C in my car.
They installed a new receiver drier and regassed the system. Feels so good ❄
