I want to buy new rims for my 1979 Volvo 244. But I get lost trying to find what is compatible / suitable. I want this look. Do I need spacers and if so are they legal and how do they work?

Currently I have these thin original rims and thin tyres as specified. Will changing to the look I want be detrimental to vehicle handling? Here is Ele and dog showcasing the current setup with original hubcabs.

Multi X's as in the first picture will bolt straight on. You can get aftermarket stuff in custom offset and sizes but be wary that it will train track with the grooves in the road a little bit. I have kind of that same style wheel but in 17x8 with a huge polished chrome dish, looks awesome.

If you can't find Multi-X wheels, Coronas may suffice and are more common.

GT seems to refer to more than one style of wheel. This is what I was told are GTs, which is what I have on my sedan.

True, but GT wheels are also the 14"x5.5" wheels that were fitted to 1979 242GT and later available on other 240s as an option, eg. a genuine accessory that you could buy for your normal 244DL or GL.

I personally love the multi x and didn’t know they existed a couple of months ago. They will look so good on the 240 and they are 15” as supposed to the other 14” mesh style volvo wheels

To fit on a 240 I’ve read that I need to ‘grind off the crash ears ’. Any comments on this?

Still keen on a set if they are floating around.

Crash ears are only for North America as their requirement for safety is different. Everywhere else doesn't have them.
So multi x's will fit with no mod.
