Helping someone look for a car, they are keen on the Volvo V60.
Probably looking at post-2015 which would get the 2.0 litre 4-cyl engine with the 8 speed "geartronic" gearbox.
Are those gearboxes reliable?
How reliable are those engines (particularly compared to, say, a T5 whiteblock)?
Anything else to look out for?

I'm interested in the same answer but when will we know?
Post 2015? Do we really know true durability on anything until closer to 10 years?
I avoid anything that doesn't have a proven engine / transmission history. I'm personally not going to touch any of these newer machines till the general consensus is that they are capable of 300K+ trouble free motoring.

I was hoping that if there were any inherent issues present, people with experience working on them would have some idea by now.

The t5 model drive-e engines had some issues with oil consumption for the first year of production
Tin foil hat speculation is that Volvo uses this to reduce fuel consumption for testing and then removes it after a year
Otherwise I've not seen anything major issue wise with them as most everything has been solved via software updates over the past 3 years
The Diesel models still have issues when used exclusively in urban driving
8 Speed reliability seams better than the 6 speed which had really solid reliability on its own
240
OK so 2016 on should be fairly safe then I guess.

Weren't the 6 speed ones the Ford Powershit boxes?
Ex850R
Powershift in everything T5, T4, D3?
Good Aisin (when treated right) 6sp in T6 and D5 is good..

6 Speed DSG was the Powershit, the T6 and D5 used the AW 6 speed which was fine

Oh ok.
T6 has oil consumption issues though doesn't it?
D5 is out because 90% of driving is city driving.
Ex850R
Neither is an issue.
Add a little oil, it's actually an electronic notification for 500ml of oil or thereabout.
Or maybe a better quality oil than dealers use....
The D5? A good indie volvo shop can monitor your swirl flaps, replace when needed, not an expensive job and do a de coking when needed too, again, not expensive, just a filthy job for them!
I'm running both these engines, have three good indie shops to use and have no worry about using both cars in city driving.
Missus loves the D5, goes hard all the time...
Both 6sp gearboxes are fine but have had fluid changed and will have every 40 odd thousand Ks. One car 150k,other 90k.
Ex850R
Drive both, see which you like..

T6 has horrid fuel economy and is pretty much same performance as the Drive-e T5 while also having a good potential to eat oil
IMHO the Drive-e T5 motor is most excellent
The T6 Drive-e motor is very high strung and complicated and is not one I would ever think about unless in the T8 form

Not sure whom you have doing D5 work but it can easily be $2k per shot every time you have an issue with EGR/Swirl/Carbon build up, I would not pick one again for 90% city use if a T5 drive-E was close in price

I hear swirl is an easy check.
Berry's know their stuff.

Are the drive-e motors Volvo's own (like the red/white blocks) or are they made by someone else (like the V8)?

Volvo made the v8, Yamaha just helped them with the design
The drive-e motor shares some original design work with the motor in the current locust st/rs but is otherwise all Volvo

Easy check but $$$$ to clean and or fix and it will need cleaning

Good to know, I always though the V8 was 100% yamaha.
In non-drivetrain matters...
Test drove a 2016 S60 today and to be honest my main criticism is the road noise, it was ridiculously loud.
The car had Michelin PS3's from memory (or whatever Michelin tyres they come out of the factory with).
Is it likely that different tyres will make a difference or is it a fundamental issue with the design of the chassis/suspension?
@Ex850R how do you find the road noise in yours?
Also, avg fuel economy on the instrument panel was something like 10.1 L/100km, honestly that's terrible... I mean my 240 does about that and it's basically 40 year old technology.

Modern cars being more efficient is just marketing BS. People buy into the hype to justify forever updating their cars. Cars are mostly heavier / larger, more powerful and often have completely useless AWD systems. Other than a handful of Diesel engines and hybrids, our old cars are just as efficient at getting the job done. My Renault 12 back in the 90's had efficiency I've not had in any car I've owned since and that was 60's tech.
I'm more fussed about bulletproof multi decade durability than fuel consumption, at least till the hybrid era evolves.
Ex850R
Tyre noise is noticeable, my new tyres are noisy but I too found Michelin (PS4s) to be noisy on my v70r.
I am going to do some sound deadening when I get a chance, the doors first.
If you want comfort, go for 17" wheels, tyres may be quieter, worth a try.
I have 18" Hankook K117, I am surprised how good they are. Given the boot in sport gearbox setting on a curve, a touch of slip if on lock then rears kick in, I like the awd system! (these tyres rated up near the top on tests I looked into, but a lot cheaper)
A thing I miss too is top quality audio from the 1997 v70r! Dynaudio speakers and Alpine made components were brilliant.
These v60 ones are HK I believe. Nowhere near the quality of old. I'm doing speakers soon too....
Since I've had service and done gearbox fluid, after re adapting the gearbox my fuel use is coming down, currently showing 10.4.
Thats OK for the way I drive it. Seems like if I drive it hard a lot it goes down... Mmm, that's good. Mine is T6, you can hear the turbo whoosh and blowoff with window down, nice.
It's a lot heavier than a 240. And in my 245 and 240 days I was astonished at how bad the fuel economy was, I've always been surprised that peeps say they are good! A tractor motor!
