Got tricked by the C30 T5 squealing sound.
Daughters car was reversing down the driveway with a loud squealing noise.
After a quick investigation with a sounding stick (its always quick she gets impatient if i ponder) somehow decided it was a buggered water pump or idler bearing so to her horror I grounded the car and ordered a timing belt kit from FCP near New York which BTW arrived in FOUR DAYS!!! They are fantastic guys to buy from. Car was due for a timing belt anyway.
At the mechanic's and said we better just check it actually is what we think it is before I left the car with him.
He listens to the car and says yeah I think its the water pump. Then I say it could be just a belt or the idler bearing.
Then he goes all silent and then suddenly gets all excited and says hang on ..... i think it could be the pcv system and takes off the oil filler cap and the whining sound disappears!!!
I limped the car back home with engine light now on.
The problem is a split diaphragm inside the pcv chamber of the oil filter housing.
But you cant buy the diaphragm unless you wait 2 months for one to arrive from Russia which appears to be the only place I can get one from.
Instead I have to buy the entire OEM housing which is around $450 to $700 here
Or get one shipped from FCP euro for around 340 AUD
Or take a risk and wait 6 weeks on a chinese copy fro $150AUD
Does anyone know where I can get a diaphragm here?
There are ones on ebay for holden astras for $30 and they look very similar, doubt they would fit, so does the $10 one on my Victa lawn mower Carby! No joy down the Ford focus track either - those guys say its cheaper to use the genuine volvo part.
Anyone done this with a generic diaphragm??
This should really just be A $5 FIX

You just replace the entire PCV unit because in addition to the diaphragm failing they are well known to crack and let out all the oil (Early ones which also had the high incidence of diaphragm failures)
I just always get the Volvo unit from FCP as its better to do it once and never think of it again than to have to replace the motor later....
