Thanks Bear. The timing belt isn't broken (cam turns and a partial removal of the cover shows no obvious damage). I'm guessing some sort of slippage: seems to be a small opening on the T-Belt cover just behind the inner tensioner, could a piece of the accessory belt make it in there?

Glad you've found Penrith good! Frustrating my daughter paid $200 to tow from city to Croydon and now it's another $250 big ones to get it towed Penrith. That's ok if it ends well, but I fear $450 in tow fees to be told that Volvo won't help fix it (perhaps claim the accessory tensioner caused it, even though it turns freely) and then I've got a broken car a hellofalongway from home.

Also, need to edit it's the 2.4i, not T5 (typo earlier). Essentially the same for this issue I'd imagine?

Request for Snoopy, the original poster: Having just returned to the Volvo fold with a MY2010 XC70 D5, I'm eagerly awaiting part 2 of this D5 need-to-do list.
I've cleaned out the EGR valve and hose, which was seriously full of tar and related gunk. Having the exhaust temp sensor changed later this week and a new power steering pump installed. Should I think about coolant change and transmission oil (125k)? Transfer case/Haldex oil? Thanks, Erik.

Doing the trans ,pump out and top up is usually recomended , The guy that did ours wa wellversed in these gearboxes accross many platforms and performed a test drive to ascertain if the auto was in good nick before hand , standard practice. He then did the correct methof fof fluid removal and fill and reset the counters and advised on adaptations. What are your observations of the auto as is?
Im considering EGR blank plate , swirl flap disabling,DPF delete as welll with a good tune to increase power a bit and remove those functions.

Can't be sure if posters are still interested in this thread, but may I ask if anyone has rrplaced or had someone else replace a D5 head? Mine's kaput after timing belt jumped when serp belt shredded. Interested to know if it is a justifiable expense, as the car has only fone lazy hw driving and is otherwise wonderful.

I am considering buying a 2009 XC60 D5 with a failed cem to replace my trusty XC90 T5.

All comments and advice on such a folly are welcome. A new cem plus instal is within my budget.

The car must be less than $5K then?

How do you know it's a failed CEM? Would be 2k-3k for new Cem and programming so you would want to be sure

Going on advice from seller and symptoms. Yet to personally inspect. $3k for a new cem installed and mapped is within budget.

I have replaced CCM from leaking windscreen on an XC60, the cems don't fail on their own so check for loose windscreen

Yes it is. I inspected and drove yesterday. Its been in a barn type shed for a while. Possibly rats have damaged some wiring. I didn't check the wind screen but access to the cem didn't show water damage or rat infestation there. I am a but to risk averse on this bargain. Thank you for the comments.

Yeah, rat damage is a gift that keeps on giving......

Freinds had a Triton, all fixed then still trouble.

I'd imagine the wiring repairs would make it a write off ..... uneconomical repairs.

I did not go ahead with the buy of that very cheap 2009 XC60 D5.

Instead, I bought a low priced 2010 XC60 D5 with 211000 kms on it, timing belt changed a year ago. New tyres. Recent full fluids and filters service. Aircon almost nil. Rattle sound from accessory drive on start, goes away after a minute. Transmission service advisory. Otherwise tidy. This is my first diesel to own.

Day 2, following the wise forum advice, replaced serpentine belt and tensioner (new bearing). Cleared transmission code. Replaced aircon small fan. Now no rattle sound, freezing aircon! Runs smoothly. Next week, flush and service haldex. Transmission flush. Reset the counters. A few cosmetic clean ups.

Grand daughter has bought the XC90, but now has her eyes on my 60! Another Volvo convert. Her father, a GMH lover in the smash repair industry, has finally reached acceptance lol.
