You'd be stretching your luck if you told them you want to import it for club shows, etc. But even if approved, you won't be able to register it or drive it on the streets.

If you want a 780 to drive, get an 88. Yes, 88s are V6s only, but you can swap in a B230FT. And you can register them in OZ for road use. BTW, to get rego in NSW under the 30 year rule, you have to wait until the actual month of manufacture to come 'round. So I have to wait until May before I can do my April 88 car. Victoria lets you do rego at 25 years, so the other 780 in OZ (an 87) is already running around.

Got cold feet due to the condition - thought maybe a nicer one at a higher price is a better investment. Still not ruling it out though.

Definitely want a 91 with B230Ft. Was the last year made and very few at that (519). Theres several ways around the pre 89 rules, but "rally use" or "display purposes" require the least $ for unnecessarily processes.

Had a chat with department of infrastructure. Definitely possible. The details about museum is not at all required (I even pointed out the website talks about providing a letter etc). Was advised just need to make a statement it is for show purposes and demonstrate that I am involved in car displays at car show etc / club memberships etc. If it is genuine it should be approved. I've nearly got my own museum ?

I did ask about road use and the lady advised that it was only their jurisdiction to control the import, and the purpose of this option is not intended for road use. We discussed however once the vehicle is here it is the business of the RMS (or equivalent) to determine eligibility for REG. Definitely once 30 yrs historic REG would be no issue.

I recently put historic REG on a Chrysler Lebaron which I purchased off the person who imported it (unregistered). When I went to the RMS I tried to show all the import paperwork and approvals. The guy didn't care less and told me he didn't want to see it: Just Bill of sale, pink slip and eligibility for historic REG.

I'd follow up the rego requirements with the RMS or your chosen state officials. IIRC, there were a lot of requirements which 1989+ cars had to meet, which up to 1989 cars didn't. There used to be a federal requirement that 1989+ cars had to be on the SEVS list, but maybe that has changed.

That car you're looking at belongs to '2manyturbos' from Turbobricks, and he's mentioned in the "Tonight's Volvo Orphan" thread that it's in reasonably good condition, except for the ding in the rear quarter, and he's selling it only because he rarely drives it.
