I've been looking at the S60 & S80 cars around the 2005 mark and my budget might just stretch to one of these with the help of SWMBO.
What's everyone's view of the Volvo AWD option?
I've heard some bad reports about it in regard to:
* poor performance (not better than the FWD cars
* unnecessarily complicated
* tyre replacement requirements.

To be honest and blunt. If you thought s90s going for near 4k is too much. You won't like awd volvos.

Not worth it imo.

Actually that was a 1996 960not an S90. The S90 I looked at was $8500!

Ask Pom about his S60R, Rob is converting his C70 to awd, I have had an 855R an S70T5, two V70T's and am getting a V70R Awd.
Why? Because a front wheel drive turbo with some power upgrade will be useless in the wet,has torque steer even at 140kmh,will spin inside tyre (even with semi track day tyres) in the dry when cornering.
The mechanical problem can happen but just as sure it won't. Tyres need to be checked often and swapped front to back a lot.
See Volvospeed,Hussain,he runs an xc70 which puts out near 500hp with nothing modified in the awd system bar a later S60r driveshaft.
Plenty of old xc70 around and much loved by their owners......
I am going awd cos I have had enough of fwd turbo.
There has been an S60 V8 awd in qld on eBay, and give him a call or see what Berry has in Melbourne, Australia call Pom/ Mark or Graeme.
Rob
I think it depends what you want to do with it. Realistically, on an everyday driver that pokes around the city and does the odd trip at 110 up the motorway, awd is all of the things you have described.
I will go awd on my C70, my XC70 is awd. For what I do or intend to do with both of these cars awd is great.

Rob,
Well, I'm not going racing or rallying. Nor do I intend to enhance the performance of the car as I am trying to choose one that has the extra performance built in. The car I'm replacing is a Magna Altera with a 3 litre, FWD, six engine.
That in mind, I began looking at the S60 turbos (not sixers alas) and the S80 sixers. The latter replaced the S90 which replaced the 960s. Going through the ads of cars for sale there are a number of AWD versions (costing more of course).
While I like the idea of AWD, the question I face is whether I should avoid these and not consider them because they are not worth it or cause too much trouble.

Awd for a road car really doesn't add that much. Especially given the extra costs and complexity. Sounds like an s60 t5 or late s70 fits the bill nicely.

Yeah I'm not a fan either, we had the AWD fixed twice (I think twice, definitely once) on the late 02 XC and it broke again each time. Maybe on the 08+ models but not the early cars.

Don't bother with the light preasure turbos, go for the RRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
The T5 is just front wheel drive, the AWD is a LPT, the R is the full monty, and with a tune go very well, come down and take my car out for a spin.

Mark, since you don't have any room for cars and keep buying them (btw,the Volvo's you buy are taking funds that the wife needs for that Safari Wagon...) I need to look after the S60r here....

So true and she would love that car, I might need to speak to the bank manager $-)
