I think my vehicle is rare but unfortunately I think it stopped appreciation when I did this to it; it's no longer anywhere near stock; this is why is does not concern me to change the motor. If it was pristine OEM then I would totally agree with you.
When and/or if I proceed with the conversion, I will be keeping the OEM engine to go with the car if I ever sell it so someone who wants it original can retrofit it back.
I have researched this for over 12 months and I have looked at a lot of engines:
VW - VR6. VR5. 20v 4cyl. 20v 5cyl. W8.
Rover - V8
GM - 16v 4cyl. 24v V6. LS1.
Volvo - B234 16v 4cyl. B6254 24v 6cyl. B8444 V8.
You are correct - my engine bay is tight....... I'm still researching.
So far I have got to the decision to stay 4cyl and I'm trying to stay away from Jap motor (not that there is anything wrong with them). The B234 just seemed to tick the boxes but I am no expert on "Volvo".
fwiw - the Volvo 16v DOHC will fit although this guy did have to mod his hood:
