Morning guys, a quick question the the about the Aw30-40le. When I bought the 960 gor the 264 conversion, I knew that I would have to replace the transmission as the cooler sprung a leak in the radiator and now have milky oil.
So I found a Toyota soarer tranny to install in place of the aw30-43, issue is the aw30-40 does not have the hole for the speed sensor on the front right hand side.
Do all the aw3x-4x have the tone rings/pick up for the encoder at the front of the gearboxes and it's just a case of drilling out the knock out and installing the sensor?

Done a bit of reading about these boxes lately - have you got an AW30-41 from a Soarer? I may be wrong (probably am) but that one seems to get its speed signal from an ABS tone wheel.
Also, what computer are you planning to use with your car - the original, or something like a Compushift?

Swap dash to 86+ 240 dash and run a diff mounted sensor?

@Philia_Bear
I have to run a diff mounted sensor for the speedometer and ecu. Was just gonna bolt in the g80 from the 960 with tone ring and I was going to see about retro fitting the speedo into my 240 cluster and bringing a pigtail out some where.
But I haven't tried it so I don't know if it will work.
They Toyota uses a pick-up sensor off the tail shaft part of the box which is gonna get changed for the Volvo unit
This tranny has a kick down cable too for controlling the pressure? Instead of the solenoid, which will more than likely give me a headache, but the accelerator spool has the space for the kick down.

Are you sure you have the right box? The cressida had a 30-40, but any other model is going to be different. The fact you've said 30-41 for a start.
They need the speed sensor at the front of the box if they do have one, for the lock up converter activation.

@Vee_Que yeah unless someone has changed the label, AW30-40LE came from a soarer, seen the car my self. The bonus is it was free. I have tried various places over here and the 43's are hard to find.
Could get it reconed, but it probably worth putting the money towards a manual conversion?
Vee_Que
They aren't a weak box. But should be ok if known history.

Sorry I ment recondition the AW30-43 as it has water damage

A built one will hold 500hp forever
You will spend more on finding and fitting a manual that will hold 500hp

What's wrong with running the Volvo 30-40?
No shitty lockdown cable to break and can run full line pressure all the time
gavinh
@Philia_Bear that's the point I have the box there, running the standard tcu, if I drill out the knock out would it have the tone ring/pickup built in as standard
Philia_Bear
This is in the extension housing?
gavinh
No at the front, left hand side close to the bell housing

So bit the bullet last night and pulled the oil pump off the soarer box to see if it had an in built tone ring.
Well it didn't! So pulled the Volvo box apart found the tone ring was attached to the overdrive drum.
Later today I will swap the complete over drive drum from the volvo box and reinstall the clutch packs from the Toyota box and drill out the 15mm hole and taper it for the Volvo speed sensor.
Will put up some photos later once I'm home to assist with the explanation.
Also want to try and swap the selection rod from the volvo to the Toyota box as it looks like it will slide out? From the pass side

How come you needed a speed sensor?
If you get a later diff with the 48 tooth tone wheel you can splice the signal from that, feed it through the electronics in the 960s cluster & then feed the signal back into the TCM.
Although it hasnt been documented being an issue leaving it out, it Mayyyy cause a limp mode condition.

Got it hopefully sorted, reboxed the aw30-40 into the aw30-43le case reusing all the good clutch packs from the 30-40 and valve body from the 30-43. Had to fit the tone ring etc and hope it all works, Al it's cost me so far is a gasket and filter.
