V50 Transmission issue "Urgent Transmission Service Required"

So I ended up with the high mileage C30 manual from another thread. Nice car and really stood up well over 200K KLMS.

Decided to take the V50 Auto AWD 2007 (80K on the clock, owned for just 5 thousand) when going to look at the C30 and this involved a nice drive up the steep twisties near Kurrajong. Drove the car in a spirited way as your supposed to and half way up CLUNK from the transmission. Was like I'd hit a big pothole, perhaps completely dropping out of a gear. "Urgent Transmission Service Required". Pulled over, switched car off and re-start. Warning gone and transmission back to normal.

Decided to buy the C30 which involved another spin up and down the twisties to get some cash. On the way back up CLUNK again. Same message plus CEL. Observed transmission was "flaring" when power applied at this time (perhaps just not in torque lock up). Switch off and re-start and transmission warning extinguished but CEL remain on. Transmission back to normal though.

About a thousand after first acquiring the car I did drive it in manual mode and after just a few minutes it did the same thing. Re-start and cleared, been perfect outside these three times. Seems to do it when being driven in a spirited way. Car is operating perfectly fine ATM, but I assume a repeat of the same type of driving would replicate the fault.

Just to make matters worse, on that same short stretch of road the expansion tank decided to shit itself. Seriously VOLVO, my old 240 has a bent bonnet that's been exposing the tank to UV for over a decade and it still holds pressure at 30 years of age! Replaced with part 30776151, about $80. This is a known fault and Volvo should be ashamed for not selling these at a small loss, say $20-30. The purchased C30 has a repaired tank as well. The new part appears to be an identical moulding, particularly where the tanks fail. Has Volvo actually done something about the design or is this new part number just going to do the same thing?

Purchased a "Mechpro" OBDII scanner for $89 on special at Repco to check and clear the codes.

Both cleared and car is running beautifully. Not sure if a visit to the stealer for software update is time and money well spent?

Also, shortly after the first occasion this happened in manual mode I did a drain and fill with Mobil JWS3309 (3.7L out and same back in). Was done just as routine service, been doing this every 10K on my XC90 to clear all the old shite the previous owner was driving around with.

Hrm. I am seriously reconsidering buying a Mondeo instead of an S40 auto now.
I hear an indy volvo shop did 5 replacement transmission on s40, c30, v50 last year. Not good sign.
Am hoping yours comes good with major flushing and software updates?

I've googled a bit and transmission issues with these don't seem to be a common issue, let alone at these KLMS. Even the fluid in the drain and fill was reasonably clean (compared to my XC90 with 110K, with dark stinky fluid).

I still recommend the C30, S40 and V50 especially in manual.
