Hi all, looking to maybe buy new complete driveshafts for my 850R with manual transmission, in the hope that they are responsible for the rattle and vibration my car seems to get.
Is there a favourite company locally that people buy these from, or do people tend to buy them from overseas? One person told me they bought some from ANF driveshafts but thought I'd see what people's opinions were.
And does anyone know whether the auto/manuals require different driveshafts?
Cheers!
Rob
factory manual?
Julian
Yes

Mmmm, tricky RH shaft version.
Julian
Ok, so different shafts? Any idea where best to get some? Some sellers on eBay say their products fit both auto and manual, so looks like there's a bit of misinformation from some of them. Quick bit of reading seems to suggest thicker shafts on the manual cars so need to make sure I get those.
Rob
Manual shafts are slightly thicker, as are turbo versions but all fwd shafts are interchangeable.
The exception is the rh shaft on an M59 equipped car (factory manual 850R only) . That shaft is unique.

I buy rebuilt driveshafts from
A&L Driveshaft in Cantebury NSW. The guy who runs it is aware of the different sizes of the manual and auto P80 driveshafts, but he usually only has auto ones in inventory. If you bring him your manual ones, he will rebuild them for you, it takes about 2 hours.
Julian
Thanks James. What does a rebuild actually consist of? I understand cv part wears and needs replacing, do they also change the boots and center bearing for RH side shaft? What other wearing components do they replace/repair?

They can do the bearing if it needs replacing. They replace the entire knuckle/spindle with a new one, and of course new boots as part of that process.

Ok thanks for the info. Is it the kind of thing that any driveshaft place could rebuild just as well, or do you think there's any reason to go to one with experience doing shafts from the 850?

I'm pretty sure any driveshaft shop will be able to help

Hi all,
So I got motivated this weekend and removed my driveshafts, and intend to get them rebuilt at a driveshaft place somewhere here in Newcastle. What sort of money should it cost to get this done, just as a benchmark?
I also found that my bottom swaybar end link ball joints have ripped boots. When I apply some leverage to them (car up on jack stands and suspension fully extended) there is a very small amount of movement. Thinking these are worth replacing? Also have ripped boots on the steering ball joints, and whilst they have no notable play I might replace the short arm with ball joint here as well on both sides. Wishbone bushes and ball joint seem fine so will not replace them.
Is there anything else I should replace whilst in here? Driveshaft seals? I stuck my breaker bar into the splines in the gearbox where the driveshafts go and tries moving it around a bit, but no play there.

I'm Sydney I pay about $230 for a rebuilt pair.
Julian
Did some calling around Newcastle and nowhere seems to be doing it. They all just replace them with new. One place said they can send them off somewhere else to get done, but it's $160-$230 per shaft which seems a bit pricey. Maybe I need to take a trip down to Sydney and drop them off.

I use A&L Drive Shafts in Campsie. If you have the manual ones, I think they are beefier than the auto ones, in which case rather than getting an exchange pair (which will almost certainly be auto), you'll want to have them rebuild the ones you have. I've done it before, it takes them about 2 hours, but definitely phone ahead in case they're busy or something. The price if I recall was about the same as getting an exchange pair.
Julian
I called them today at the guy said they'd be fine to rebuild them. He said $88 each shaft which sounds suspiciously cheap? I'd have to make sure he understands what needs to get done but sounds like it might be a goer. Looked into getting them couriered down and the online quote was only $20 something dollars, despite them being damn heavy. So looks like I'll courier them down.
jamesinc
Yeah that doesn't sound wrong. I might be confusing the pricing with the cost to rebuild a TWR rack.
Julian
Just got a call from a&l driveshaft. The guy said he has a replacement for the short driveshaft but needs to rebuild the long one. He reckons the inner driver and middle bearing looks fine so he doesn't think they need rebuilding. Hopefully he's not just saying that because they don't have the parts to rebuild them or something. He said that they will rebuild the outer joint for the long shaft.

You are lucky its the outer, those bits are still available
