Oil velocity for xc60 D5 2009

Hey guys I've recently purchased a 2009 volvo xc60 with the twin turbo 5 cylinder diesel motor. Now with us blokes being in aus I thought it would be a good idea to use a 5w-40 oil. However, after talking a volvo mechanic who seems to know a fair bit about them said he refuses to put a higher velocity than 30 into it otherwise as said in his words 'you'll blow your engine up'. So my question is, has anymore been using a 5w-40 and had any troubles? I just think 30 would be fine if you're in the UK but here when you're towing on a 40 degree summer day, surely it would add benefit the motor keeping it cooler! Cheers

I only use penrite hpr10 10w50 in all my shit which covers about 50 Volvos
If you live in Tasmania and you see sub -10c weather... then hpr5 5w40 might be required

Btw all Volvos made since 93 have a coolant based oil cooler
Oil runs at temp of coolant which is very well regulated to 107C where possible but may be as low as 92C depending on a pile of stuff

Yeah right, I was looking at using the penrite oil as well but the enviro one because unfortunately mine was the first year to come out with the damn dpf on it! Didn't know about the coolant based oil cooler, how cool!

I run the enviro oil in late model diesel cars. 40w is fine, you may get different fuel economy by a minor amount.

All of them...
Hell the little sister in law got a good 10km+ out of the v70 with no coolant and no rotating assembly damage because of how good the penrite oil is

I've got a combined 500,000km+ on dpf equipped vehicles using the hpr10
Volvo injects so much dam diesel into the exhaust stroke it's never an issue anyways
