Extent of rebuilding an engine

Do you want a reliable rebuild, or a cheap one? If you want a cheap one , second hand. What are you after, standard rebuild or better performance or all out...

Zero balancing the flywheel and pulley to the assembly can't hurt. :)

As Mister Brick says, it's a tractor engine, and so it will never be silky smooth, however every little bit helps and you will feel the difference.

Tbh I wouldn't want a silky smooth redblock. I like the character that comes with a grumpy redblock that shakes the car to remind you that its still there. If you want silky smooth then buy a Lexus V8. As long as its not shaking itself to death because there is something wrong then its all good.

My b20 is balanced, but has a lightened flywheel and an aggressive cam so at idle it is lumpy. But when cruising its not noticeable. Like a b280 v6.

Driven one? I did daily for 80,000kms. The engine was not an issue and idle was no rougher then my 740t with the ipd cam. And cruising was smooth. As they are designed to be.

Great discussion, did not see a comment about checking rings in the bore before assembling, having been involved in V16 engine rebuilds, using a white marker pen to identify bolts than have been torqued . Its a bummer when you get called for dinner and return to try and remember where you were up to. You young guys may not have this problem

People have all kinds of reasons for moding an engine. Some just for pure grunt/power. For me, if i had the money, Id do as "1971_144GL" described. Just knowing i was using an engine that was super finely balanced, would make driving it a pleasure. I know a guy who did do this to a "competition C" 240 engine...and he says it went better than a turbo. Yet, if he drove it like a daily driver, it got slightly better economy than a standard engine...and it had twin carbs not EFI. That has great appeal to me. And i missed out on buying that engine. Double dang!!

Im sorry bro, but sometimes you come across as knowing everything. You didnt understand my original question, because you are in a hurry to know everything. You jumped to conclusions about what i was asking. There are some things outside your knowledge, just as there is heaps outside mine. If we cant accept there are things outside what we know, we dont learn. The same a while ago when i spoke about water injection and how its boosts power without any moding to the actual motor. But you think you know everything...and that WI cant possibly do that, because you dont think so. Well a dyno test proved it. The point is, if you think you know everything, you lose out on learning things outside what we think we know.

Sure. But physics suggests an na motor will not be as powerful as even a stock manual turbo, the best I've seen an na redblock with stock b23e compress do with a bigger than stock cam and minor port work is 90rwkws. Regardless of fuelling it can only suck and squeeze so much air. Where a factory turbo manual 740 makes over 100rwkws and I've seen it more than once in different turbo b230s.

I'm open to it, but doubtful that the balancing and lightening of a crank is the reason it gains 30kws on a stock motor in good condition. (70kws is a high figure for a b23/230e with K or H cam)

If the same money had been tossed into a b230ft motor the turbo motor would be at 200kw+ and would destroy the na motor

Also... no offence... dyno results are easily faked and are frequently faked to make people feel happier about themselves

Easier answer is b6304 every single time anyways

I don't think I would ever bother to rebuild one again, imho money is far better spent just sourcing and swapping something else Volvo into the car

I can understand rebuilding something to keep the numbers the same for value reasons... thank God no one in the Volvo collecting world is that anal about the more exxy historic Volvos floating around
