740 manual conversion parts

After all the bits needed to do manual conversion on an LH2.2 740 Turbo. I wish I had seen the add Spac had a few years ago.

Look for 760 turbos being wrecked. Try the UK site....pedal boxes are the hard bit to find.

What about the other bits? I've got a few M46 units out of 200 series cars. Tailshaft, shifter etc etc will all be unique to the 740 manual?

Freight from the UK would likely be an issue for tailshafts etc. Would probably be a better investment to bring an entire 940T with an M90 box if importing from the UK....

Mark at berry has a couple full m90 conversion kits for around 1750 bucks iirc.

It may be to easier to do a T5 build seeing the 700 series manual parts are hard to find.

Wouldn't the custom / modified tailshaft plus adaptor plate and bellhousing machineing etc end up costing a packet?

I like the idea of keeping it stock / OE as it's on club plates. Also wondered how tidy the shifter looks on a T5 conversion.

If done right it is bang on. You don't machine the bellhousing.
What I'm trying to say is checkout your options...

If you are lucky and find the bits go for it. But from my experience they are getting a lot harder to find. Tail shaft and input are a non issue.

The VQ and DeeWorks adapter plates bolt onto a Volvo manual bellhousing without any machining. You may need to obtain a second front tailshaft section and have it shorten and balanced to fit the T5, and you will need to sort out the gearbox crossmember. With LH 2.2, you don't even need to worry about having a flywheel with timing marks on it.

If you use a T5 gearbox from an AU Ford, nobody will ever know unless they look hard under the car. The AU Ford version of the T5 box has its shifter lever in the correct position for 700/ 900 fitting. Obtaining engineering approval shouldn't be a problem unless it;s a real dog's breakfast of a job.

Thanks. I'll start collecting bits for an AU T5 conversion for my 88 wagon (the AU being old and often high KLMS would make finding a nice one hard. I notice these are still available new).

I would imagine that "engineering" would not really be necessary, it's only a tranny.

My 87 wagon is a favourite of mine and I definitely want her to be Volvo bits. I'll see what it'll cost if I drive down to Vic and ask berry motor group to do the M90 conversion for me.

Indeed - in NSW, you can squeak it in under VSI-6 Revision 3, section 6, since the change can be done with adapter plates and no mods are needed to the transmission tunnel.

The only machining needed on the bellhousing is the removable centre sleeve for the input shaft reamed out a bit. The input shaft gets modified as per the t5 thread, and the snout on the t5 is lathes down to not far from the seal.

You will need a clutch and I also offer a 240mm heavy duty unit, fitted on a flat flywheel. Price is around $500 for an lh 2.2 car.
I'm making a run of adaptor plates again too. $200
I also do adaptors to mate a t5 to a 740 auto crossmember.

Wish there was another (prolific and using standard parts) option. Was reading some USA threads about the T5. Pretty sure it was the T5 anyway, saying it's quite a noisy gearbox. I think they also said something about the ratio of two successive gears being too close together too. i.e. You've no sooner changed into 3rd or 4th, and it's already time to shift to the next gear.

Thanks, but they are not that bad, the ratios are similar to an m46, with a better 1st and 5th, there is no great noise from them and with an easily available shifter they are a rewarding box to use.

The m90 is the other option. There aren't any available from Micheal right now to my understanding.

Why is everyone so down on the M46? I thought it was good for 300Hp? That's enough for most people.... And it's a more enjoyable experience than some boxes I've used (notchy Tremec in the F6 310).

No, they die behind stock turbo cars, they die on v6 cars. Most of the issue is the overdrive clutch packs, they are old at this point and slip even in other gears. Then when you make 50 or more kws than stock they blow up 3rd gear.

Also, basic parts for the M46 - like synchro rings and the fragile gears like 3rd - are NLA.
