Is the 140 fuel tank the same as a P1800E. Looks flatter but will it fit the same hole in the boot

Nope, AFAIK they're different, I believe the 1800 tank is smaller.

Also, the filler necks are on different sides.

PS: definitely different. p/n 683393 (not USA) or 684030 (USA, CAN) are the 1800E tanks.

However, Volvo Parts Webstore (USA) says they have a brand new one in stock.

Thanks for the research, will have to clean mine out. The 140 tank is therefore for sale. I have had it since the late 70's. You can see from the photos, has been stored with oil in tank. If a new P1800E tank is worth is worth $700 then a very good 140 tank must be worth $150. What do you think.

That tank looks quite good.

However, what is known to happen with old tanks is sometimes they have a rust hole in an internal feed pipe, so the things will starve for fuel when there's plenty of fuel in it, Had a bit of a chat about this at the National Rally with some of the P1800 folks.

Anyway, I followed what @Dauntless did and got one of these inspection cameras via Ebay, and it makes the inspection of the inside of the tank very easy.

Do you know if your tank is from an early or later 140?

They are the same physical size and fit perfectly but the gauge sender is a different size - earlier is smaller and won't make a later gauge work. The senders aren't interchangeable. I fitted 1968 tank in a 1973 car which is how I know. The 1974 is different yet again.

I suspect, but don't know for sure, that the changeover happened when they went from the ribbon speedo to the dial ones.

I'm currently a long way from my 140s, but yours looks like the earlier one. If it's a later one, I'd be interested.

It is back in the 80's when I wrecked the car, not sure but I think it was Fuel injected with dial gauges. I am away from the tank at the moment, but will check and get back to you

If fuel injected with dial gauges, that sounds promising. I'm also away from my cars, but if you still have it when I get back ( mid November, sorry) I can measure mine and check.

The easiest way would be to measure across the sender hole: 2 measurements to make sure - between the tabs that stick out and the wider measurement from the cutouts that makes the tabs.

Is there any rust showing on or near the seam with the holes to screw it to the floor? Mine rusted there because the boot leaked and it's a low point.

Do you have any other 140s with tanks to compare it with? By the way, where is the tank located? Postage might kill the idea.

Final thought: is it possible my earlier 144 tank might fit your 1800 and we just swap? My older tank looked the same size as the later one but I ran out of fuel long before I expected to. I put that down to the pickup being bent - or perhaps rusted as suggested above - but I don't really know.

Others may chime in with measurements or knowledge?

I just retread all the posts: if the 1800 filler neck is a different size, the earlier 140 won't fit a 1800 because it fitted my 1973 142 with no fiddling.

No no ... different side - i.e. 140 filler is on the RH side; the 1800 filler is on the left hand side of the car.

On request, I can go to the shed tomorrow and take photos of my 71 1800E tank which is in the car, and a 73 164E tank which isn't (164s and 140s share the same tanks).

No urgency - like I said I'm away for a while - but it would be interesting to know if the sender hole on your 1973 164 was the same as on the tank you want to sell.

Hi Hendo, Have ch.ecked out inside of tank, very impressed, very clean no sign of rust. The sender hole measures 50mm on the inner tabs and 55mm on the outer ring.
