Hi,
Would like to ask, in the long run, if I am doing mods to a car such as my 96 850R, is it better to go through a Volvo specialist or a mods specialist?
Has anyone had mixed reviews of both or any?
I suppose my question should be: would a non-Volvo specialist be able to easily decipher and work on a Volvo?

Basically, yes, someone with a history of knowledge of these cars will not re invent the wheel and cost you more.

Plenty of people around that do both.

In my experience, a good mods specialist with no model-specific knowledge is considerably better than a mediocre mods specialist with good model-specific knowledge.
I guess I should also point out that said experience has been with something as archaic as a 240 (and you'd apply the same "archaic" label to all RWD Volvos I guess). Could be a different matter if you're looking to get more power out of, say, a C30 T5.

For an 850? You need both depending on what you want
Someone who knows all of the P80's cavets, and someone who understands that sometimes "standard" equipment isnt up up the task
What kind of "Mods"? A simple tune & a stage zero? An older model volvo specialist with the tools to check wastegate settings & vac test CBV diaphragms will suffice
Further tuning, engine internals, bigger fuel pumps, injectors, intercoolers youd be looking a bit further than old m8s 240 garage at that point
Research is your friend, chances are that any ideas or plans you have for the car have been done already and already well documented!

Finally!!! Found a good Mods Specialist who can work on the 850R!! If any of you live in Perth, I highly recommend C-Red Mods, in the suburb of Beckenham! Pricing is extremely good and Marc is very honest and gave me good advice for my exhaust, etc. He can also do a Dyno-Tune on the model. Highly recommended!
