AW55-51SN in my S40 T5 has a bit of a whine.

So the short version of the story goes like this.

T5 with 250,000km cooks it's motor
I buy it cheap with grand plans
Get parts car for new engine but it is T5 AWD
Didn't want to put 250,000km auto behind a 128,000km motor
Didn't realise that I could remove the angle drive and replace the output seal and use the AWD box that came with the engine
Bought a "low km" auto from wreckers here in Sydney
Chuck it all in and flush as part of the engine install

Shifts smooth and doesn't flare, does everything you would expect with one small exception.
in 1st and 2nd gear there is a bit of a whine coming from the transmission. It is not there in the higher gears, it is not dependant on road speed rather engine speed. If it was a manuall box I would just say that there is a bit of wear on the face of the gears and get on with life.

But it isn't a manual....

What is the general consensus? Check over the AWD box and modify to suit FWD and keep it on the shelf just in case or is this thing about to go nuclear and kill kittens and children and as such should be removed post haste?

If it's failing clutch packs, first it whines, then it gets poor engagement when cold, then it dies.

But, maybe start by resetting the TCM, as it's probably still got memory from your original gearbox. I'm not sure if you need VIDA/DICE to do it.

Already done the recent as a matter of course, I have a VIDA/DICE setup and VIDA tells you to do a reset on the TCM on a fluid change as a matter of course. I have also reset the counter for the fluid for over temp and calibrated the gear selector.

I might see if I can run it through the full dedicated adaption program where you drive as different speeds etc. rather than self learn as it is now. Like I said it drives fine but James you may be onto something with the clutch pack. Another 4l of trans fluid for a flush probably wouldn't hurt either. I am using the Penrite spec ATF FS fluid which is recommended.

Not really looking forward to having to pull the box out again. It was easy when the whole motor came out. It is a different story if I want to leave the rest in place.

Forgot to mention that it makes the same noise when coasting down as well not just under acceleration.

The genuine Toyota fluid is just as cheap as the penrite, last time I checked.

Reminds me I should change the fluid in my AW55 again.

Worth mentioning, my daughter bought a Saab 900s with the exact same problem 4 years (about 40,000km) back, sounds like a turbine whine in 1st. So far, so good.

Well fluid checked and another 4l put through the box. Full drive adaptation done still there. Drives fine just a bit of a noise. Hopefully as above it is just a minor annoyance.

Thats what I'd do.

I know many people complain about these transmissions, but mine works beautifully and the car is a pleasure to drive - silky smooth shifting exactly when I expect (after I fixed the B4 servo cover). Only 215,000km on the car though, so early days.
