......aaaaaaand five years later, the story continues.
After much consideration, I decided to rebuild the B20 in this car, rather than fitting a OHC redblock in it. I'll keep this one (mostly) original. (The crazy stuff like 16V, +t, etc is happening with the 142 project... so, there's that).
This week, I've finally gotten around to pulling the head on this car.
(Can't rush these things....)
I needed to do this so I could take bore measurements before ordering pistons.
I'd been told the previous owner had rebuilt the engine, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
The bores measured 88.89mm diameter, which is standard size. Maybe it had got rings and bearings in the past?
I was expecting to find horribly worn lifters, but didn't find any.
A set of 30 thou-over pistons have been ordered from VP Autoparts, along with a CHKB20E valve kit. The latter won't be in stock until late October.
Already waiting here ready to go are a 'K' cam with new lifters (of course); an iPD alloy rocker cover and gasket, a new dizzy bush, new cam bearings, new main and big-end bearings, a VRS gasket kit, a new Melling oil pump with an iPD spring ready to fit, a new Hepu water pump, a flame trap from Hi Performance Auto in California (no one else had any!), a set of Penta steel timing gears, and a fully refurbished pair of 175 CD Strombergs. I've given up on the HS6 SUs, so they'll be up for grabs (along with the 'C' cam and its companion lifters) once Larry is running again.
'Why twin Strombergs?' you may ask. Because .... this car never had injection; the SUs have been a major PITA on this car since I got it; I've been down the DCOE Weber route before and am thoroughly over them; I won't be competing in the car; the twin CD Strombergs are factory fitment for this model; and I want reliability and reasonable fuel consumption coupled with simplicity for this car.
Also on order is some stuff from Skandix, including a 1-2-3 distributor - I know Skandix will stand by the things they sell and refer any problems back to the manufacturer if something goes bad.
I'll also be pulling the fuel tank and taking it off to the radiator guy to get re-rusted and sealed, and also cleaning out the fuel lines. There may have been rusty 'floaties' in the tank which caused no end of problems last time I took the car up to Albury and back.
This car had aircon, and I'd like to get that re-installed, too, with new lines from the evaporator to the compressor, and also get a bigger and better condenser for the system. The car did have a Sanden SD7 type compressor on there (albeit clapped out), and I'll go for another one, since the mounting bracket isn't clapped out.
Then there's new springs and Bilsteins and the iPD front sway bar plus the K-Mac rear bar to fit.... This will be enough to keep me going for quite a considerable while - I don't get things done at The Speed Of Spac! 🙂
