There is a bloke on the volvo facebook page called Jared. He has a stock ecotec in a 240, or his friend has one I cant remember the exact story. Either way there is a 240 with a stock ecotec running around so proves the point its possible.
In regards to engineering, I would just ask for the advice of an actual engineer and get his word on it. Ultimately its going to need to be certified anyway so might as well get advice early on and keep him/her in the loop.
