Roinik CLR is phosphoric acid and great for passivating steel. I saw youtube episode recently about cleaning an expansion tank using sulfamic acid. After an overnight soaking it looked pretty good.
OldnDecrepit It's likely to clean it out but I don't think you can get rid of the yellowing of the plastic.

OldnDecrepit Viktoria's wheels have been refurbished and now fitted with 195s.Hub cap mounts have been resprayed too.Wheels on the car.Wheel alignment today and I'll fit the hub caps and dress rings after that.
Ex850R Nice colour for wheels, looks fantastic but I'm no fan of whitewalls , takes away from design ethic on any car to me. Of course you HAVE to wear white bowling store and hat....
OldnDecrepit I'm the opposite. I dislike the wheel colour as I was trying to get the original "silver" and I like the whitewalls. Should look better when the caps and rings are fitted.
Roinik The original wheels were nearly a galvanised colour. Not a whitewall fan either. The original square chrome rings were just passe.
ramrod Myself I would have fit 165-80-15 tyres since those are the closest profile to what they would have had on originally
OldnDecrepit If you look back over this thread you will see that originality was never my intention.I've always opted for better than original if possible.
OldnDecrepit Viktoria at the Gold Coast Antique Auto Club's Show and Shine event. She now has her hub caps on but no dress rings. The originals fit I can't get the new ones on as yet.
wehaveitnow Love this! I've just bought this '74 164te which is going to need a lot of work... one question: there's a bracket on the floor between the front seats - what's it for? Is there something that attaches to it, or is it for the bench-seat model or something?? Cheers
OldnDecrepit Nope, never seen that before. Maybe they had some sort of aftermarket centre console installed. I have seen some with the 240 arm rest installed but I don't think it used that sort of bracket.Try posting it on the 164 page in Facebook.
wehaveitnow Awesome thanks O&D and Cap'n LF -appreciate it!O&D does yours have anything in that spot, or just carpet?
wehaveitnow Cool. Not sure whether I'll ever be able to find one of those consoles anyway...Thanks everyone
