OldnDecrepit I have recently purchased a 1974 Volvo 164E and have named her Viktoria. She was bought from someone in Melbourne and was originally imported CKD and assembled in the (Nissan?) factory there. I am currently in the process of getting her roadworthy but there isn't that much to do. Biggest expensive will probably be tyres as they are out of date. Here's a few pics. Interestingly she has aftermarket stabiliser bars front & rear (K-Mac I think) and the ignition seems to be non-standard too. I currently have the very rusty air cleaner being sand blasted & colour bonded. Tomorrow I'll be taking the stabiliser bars off and to size up for new bushes. I intend cleaning the bars and painting them yellow as they are currently orange. New plugs are ready to go in and a new coil and ignition leads should be ready for pickup tomorrow. The coil is leaking oil so it definitely needs replacing. The current wheels are rusty so they'll have to go for sand-blasting too. I have sets of Novas and Dracos that I can use in the meantime with new tyres. She has fuel injection and a mobile expert is coming on Monday to clean the injectors. Springs and shocks are also on the to-do list but the priority is on things to get her roadworthy at the moment.
Vee_Que Looks good, sway bars is an interesting part of the cars history as well as electronic dizzy, both good things, though the dizzy may be a 75' model one. Rear headrests are 264 ones which is interesting, the rest of the interior looks amazing!
OldnDecrepit Vee_Que - how do I tell if it's a 1975 one? I'll post some pics tomorrow of the ignition setup.
Rob easy to identify, take a pic with the cap off. I don't believe any 164s with factory electronic ignition came to Australia.
OldnDecrepit Got the stabiliser bars off this morning and now in the process of getting all the orange paint & plastic coating off. Here's photos of the ignition setup, a coil & ballast resistor, some sort of electronic ignition and an altered distributor:
Major Ledfoot Definitely a K-Mac rear bar. Is the front bar more yellow than orange? If so, it may be a Selby 24mm front bar. Had both on my previous 144 of yesteryear, and would gladly have them on my 'new' one. But check the condition of the bolts and U-bolts on the K-Mac bar - once upon a time, one of the bolts snapped on me as I was going through Dunlop Loop at Amaroo Park, putting me into a 360. As that gave the fella behind me a hellava fright, you can imagine what it did for me... That's a Lumenition points replacement system - got a pair for my 142 twins, but one may go into the 'new' 144 too - back in the day, I also had a similar system and it never missed a beat. It's not a substitute for a 123, but it's not as expensive either, and it's far nicer than points.
OldnDecrepit The front is definitely 22mm and while the colour looks different to the back one I think it's because the rear had some sort of plastic dip rather than paint. Thanks for the tip about the U-bolts I'll see if I can get replacements rather than putting the old ones on. Preferably metric ones! I think I'll rewire the ignition set up as it doesn't look great and the wires have been left unprotected.
carnut222 Nice car - the leather looks to be in great condition! Quite a rare colour as well - great buy! :)
OldnDecrepit Thanks carnut222, but the pictures are better than it is in real life. Got the two stabiliser bars cleaned up but rather than painting them I thinking of getting them sand blasted & powder-coated as I've already have the air cleaner assembly being done. New bushes are proving to be a problem especially for the "D" ones. Picked up a new coil and ignition leads this afternoon for her too.
OldnDecrepit Progress is being made. Installed new coil and leads and have begun the process of replacing hoses where possible with blue silicone ones. I've done all the 5 & 10mm ones and will be ordering 25mm pieces tonight. The injector guy has cleaned them up and reinstalled them. Engine runs better now but there's still a slight miss. I'm hoping that will go away when I replace the plugs. Got a set of original set from Hinterland European. Got the washer pump working again after disassembling it and cleaning. The mounting for the washer bottle will have to be cleaned and painted. Sway bars and air cleaner due back next week after sand blasting and colour bonding in a light blue. Bushes for the front sway bar should be here by end of this week. So will a new washer pump. Still need a new drivers seat belt as it's pretty frayed and there's supposed to be a fuel line under the car that needs replacing.
OldnDecrepit I haven't played around with tappets for 30+ years. Think I'll leave that to my mechanic. Besides there's plenty else to do to get this beast roadworthy.
ab1 any idea where to obtain one of these after market sway bars id imagine they improve handling quite a bit @bgpzfm142
