Hi folks, I had a discussion started on this but it got confusing so I have started a new one. Will close the other.
Ok, my 1989 240 is running like a hairy goat. Definitely getting too much fuel. It starts fine. Engine jumps around all over the shop when you hit the throttle.
I have checked diagnostic codes and for the fuel system got the following
113
232
121
We tried removing the harness from the Air Mass Meter. The car still ran... exactly the same. There was no improvement. We have read conflicting info. Some say if it runs at all then the AMM has a problem. Others, if it improves the running there is an AMM problem. So we have no idea if this is an indicator or not.
Someone in the last thread suggested fuel injectors. That sounds like it might be the go to start with. Can anyone give me some advice on how to check these? If any experts have any ideas they are much appreciated.
In the past, we have had a no start problem. This is not an issue now. To correct that, we replaced the fuel pressure regulator, distributor cap, leads and spark plugs. Ran like a top for about 1000 klms. Then suddenly this hairy goat issue. The spark plugs were filthy. Gave them a good clean and she ran ok briefly. However, soon back to the hairy goat.
Your help, as always, is very much appreciated. After having spent my life avoiding looking under the bonnet of a car, I am now very much getting my hands dirty!
Thanks,
Tracey

Please Tracey , watch out using terms like 'hairy old goat ' on a volvo forum , it may offend some hairy old goat on the forum :D
To check the injectors you need to remove thm and see if the o rings are perished , have a shop give them an ultrasonic clean while out and put new o rings on anyway.
Some one here will have spares for you I imagine.
That's my knowledge of redblock done. My 245 was older type injection.

Tell me if you solve the problem please, because I've got a Volvo 740 gl with exactly the same problem, and it runs the same when the mass airflow plug is disconnected as well ;)

And I forgot to add, I've got a hole in the muffler and a strong petrol smell is coming from underneath the car, it could be from the bottom of the engine and it has black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe, it sounds like a diesel Volvo !

Sorry Snoopy, I will only refer to cars in that manner... never a person! Didn't enter my head.. I forgot to mention that it is spitting out lots of black smoke too. Darc has reminded me. Very strong smell of petrol. We have checked the little wells for the fuel injectors and there are no pools of fuel. I have been dreading the old remove the injectors but feel that is the next step. Ah well, will have to bite the bullet.
I have read that O2 sensor could also be a problem. Will start with the injectors unless anyone else has any ideas.
Thanks, Tracey

Check that the rubber hose from the metal feed pipe on the firewall hasn't split or perished... Fine cracks that leak under pressure, particularly high load

If your problems the same as mine, injectors have already been replaced on my car with brand new ones, and it did nothing, I'll replace the distributor cap and rotor next and ill let you know if it works
@bartra ;)

Tracey , I jest , I am an old goat and I don't mind. :)>-

Hi Darc, Good luck with your replacements. As I said, that worked for 1000 klms with us but now it is running reallly badly. Tracey
Thanks Snoopy, You had me worried I was being offensive... Who knows if I am breaching site rules or something.. Very happy to hear you are ok about me flinging the jargon around. Makes it less boring - to write at least! Tracey

(Bumpish) Check fuel feed line...

Thanks Tiga, Will be having a look at it today. Saw your post but haven't yet had a chance to do it. Much appreciated,

Tracey, just as a general reminder to you and others, here are the Terms of Service

Hi Tiga, Snoopy & Darc,
Yeehaa... fixed. Hopefully for good. I checked the fuel feed line... all good. I found a couple of other sites with similar issues. Found this gem...
http://www.volvowiringdiagrams.com/volvo/LH%202.4/LH2.4%20Manual%20Complete.pdf (if this link doesn't work replace each %20 with a space). It is a complete document on the fuel system for B230F engine. On page 32 there is a complete overview of the fuel system. I got up to checking the connectors. I found the Knock Sensor Connector was very wet inside. Didn't seem to be fuel so possibly condensation. I blew the connector out with a compressor, started the engine and all good. Seems the Knock Sensor sends extra fuel to the engine when there is a knock to compensate. Must have been shorting and sending the wrong message. At this stage (have driven it 5 klms only so far) it is still blowing a bit of black smoke when we rev the engine. Will keep an eye on it and check the spark plugs again when it is cold. The rough idle and fuel smell are all gone and the engine runs nice and smoothly.
Darc, another link worth checking is

Thanks again for all your help, it is very much appreciated, Tracey
Now to give her a good clean. I need to sell her and concentrate on the 850. Will be very sad to do so.

Nice work, well done ;-)
Ex850R
Tracey , you could be the new problem solver here!
Ex850R
Just an idea , I don't know much about 240s but does the ECU need to be reset after you fixed the problem? Maybe power disconnect for a bit or both +/- touched together , just the cable not the battery , to reset?

Hi Snoopy, I am pretty good at problem solving... was a computer programmer in a past life and I have a dogged determination. Have avoided looking under the bonnet of a car for my entire life (am 56 now) as my father was a mechanic and I hated his smell when he came home... However, the old Volvo's have finally got me. I really like the cars and it is way too expensive to take it to the mechanic in my country town when things go wrong. My other half is pretty good with cars but doesn't know Volvo's. So I do the research and he used to do the work. However, this is changing. I fixed the air con in the 850 myself and did this last one myself. Getting very dirty hands!
Ah well, it had to happen I guess! Tracey

Hmmm I will look into it. I know the OBD codes are all clear but didn't think of anything else. Couldn't really hurt now could it..
