DW42 Thanks oldhat -- I didn't know that crash data were compiled here in Oz . It got me thinking that the Australian crash data for Volvos must be based on a very small sample size of accidents -- most Volvo models were/are niche market cars here. I'm more prone to believing the Swedish or US accident data, which rate 240s in particular as much safer.
Chris You have to watch the age of the data and how it is calculated. The 240 has gone from 4 to 3 to 2 stars in Australia over the last ten years or so, which is about right. As vehicles get older the relative performance in a crash reduces. The data is prepared by MUARC, who correct for a bunch of factors in preparing the ratings. I have a big soft spot for the 240, but I wouldn't claim they are close to modem safety standards.
Ex850R The man I work closely with was the crash data compiler for Monash University team who did the work for all major car manufacturers here for a time till they got it all from computer simulation I guess. He flew all over Australia measuring and compiling data for the number crunchers. The things he saw were very scary when he talks of them.... The mobile phone still unlocked, screen on down beside seat is telling...
Ex850R Ohh, 38kmh into the side of a car in a like for like vehicle or bigger is permanent serious injury but most likely death no matter how many Airbags. There is just not enough metal area there before flesh and bone. So, I think everyone should know that and see the results before getting a licence. Even go to morgue.
