Ahh. OK. not how I read the question.
The 123 is a great upgrade for the standard system, some (most modern) ecu's need a better crank position indicator (hall effect etc) in which case the 123 may not be suitable. They really are designed to be an upgrade for a relatively standard... or mildly upgraded engine. If you are going to use a custom, modern ecu I would go distributorless every time.
