I'm in the market for some replacements parts on my exhaust on a 1980 240 wagon, are all 240 exhausts the same from year to year (i.e any 240 is compatible) or do they change? i.e different cat's etc.
Any heads up would be awesome

86 onwards had a cat so obviously different in front. Some have under axle pipe and some over axle. Diameter varied as well...I think later years got larger diameter. Tailpipe may exit straight rearward or have S-bend. Many of the used 240s you come across will have had an aftermarket or exhaust shop custom job by now...genuine Volvo pipes and mufflers seem to last longer but not sure you can still get them here...if so they would likely be typical "stealership" lofty price. Complete Starla systems available for 240s cheap overseas but postage adds a fair bit. I've had some luck piecing together bits and pieces of used systems from several cars but never really happy with the result or the amount of effort to separate those rusty joints! Are you looking for new parts or used?

P.S. if you're in VIC Ash Davies @AshDVS might have some recommendations on exhaust shops.

thanks @carnut222 I'm located in Sydney, not after anything brand new, just a cheap effective replacement for a cracking pipe (which is ok for now, but i'm guessing the next time I go for rego I'l get pulled on it)

Muffler businesses I've been to have shaping/bending machines they use to 'trace' new sections of pipe to match the original (then flare/expand the end). The only section they've needed to order pre-made was either the exhaust manifold (get from wreckers yourself if needed) and the mufflers/muffler + cat.

Mixing and matching exhaust parts is surprisingly difficult, as the pipe diameters tend to very slightly (enough to make clamping them difficult).
I have made a number of truly home-brew exhausts using used 240 exhaust parts and I strongly recommend going to an exhaust shop and having them do it if you can afford it. Any good shop will be able to make an exhaust for any car.

Yea at this point it really comes down to the cost. It only has to last until April 2018 and then it's going to storage for a couple years while I head overseas. She just needs to go through one more summer of weekend coast trips, hoping I can bodge it until then.

Can you weld?
alexjellie
I can (been a year or so but i't's pretty much like riding a really hot bike), but currently no access to one.

Okay so sans welder my advice is thusly, take an entire exhaust from another 240. I have one that just came off a 1987 245, it'll fit, but it'll add a catalytic converter and you'll accidentally be doing the environment a favor. If you want to come and get it, it's yours for I dunno a nominal $20.

I'm away the next couple of weekends but keen to come grab it, will drop you a PM in due course.

It might not be there after Saturday, let me check
