I don't want to dump it but if I'm being realistic I feel like I'm on a hiding to nothing. More than happy to do the pump (and anything else within reason bearing in mind what the car's worth) but I'm no closer to a solution 2 years down the track, so...

Stupid question... but the d5 is a funny motor and Volvo did some funny programming to deal with emissions

E.g.... lh2.4 turbo has a giant flat spot just under 3k

Have you tried driving a different d5 back to back?

Can't say I have, although post the injector swap I'd have to say I doubt any of them would have the characteristics I'm seeing now - the unevenness/juddering sensation at 1,400 RPM is not wonderful. But I could probably manage to track one down and compare

So it's juddering while trying to cruise at 1400rpm!? I'd be looking at the gearbox then, it's very low revs to be loading an engine up at Imo.

@Vee_Que it's more that if you accelerate from those revs at about 70 the effect is very obvious. It's there in the background as a kind of minor roughness when accelerating across a wider rev and speed range. Just wasn't really doing this before.

I wonder if having the injectors in spec is exaggerating whatever else is wrong. It seems that way, as if the over fuelling by the old injectors compensated a bit.

The injectors need to be coded with a software update I think only the dealer can do it. Do you know if that was done?

Injectors require an adaption procedure using VIDA. I read somewhere it may take a while for the ECU to completely re-learn and run roughly for a few hundred km.

The barcodes on the top of the injector are calibration codes so if you change the injectors you need to recode them. I would look into this before replacing the fuel pump. I think you can see how much fuel the ecu trims off each cylinder in vida

Sounds like a plan @timbo I'll get onto the local dealer tomorrow. I did wonder about adaptation too @pauljloz Thanks to both of you, I really hope I can make headway with it because I like it and don't really want to jettison it if possible

I'm 90% sure you can do the reprogramming with a cracked copy of Vida as well as most high end Bosch scan tools

Should not be more than 50km iirc... BMW it's like 5km

You can't reset injector adaption
Only thing you can run with a cracked version of Vida is a fuel injector test to see how much the ecu is trimming to maintain correct speed of each cylinder. If you use this test in combination with a cylinder leakage test you can ascertain if the injectors are actually faulty.
The most common diesel issues I see are faulty lift pumps, intermittant EGR jamming and swirl flaps causing injector and afm codes.
I haven't found a Bosch tool that lets you do any of the diesel Volvo's we get in Australia

This is starting to ring bells
When I was in the USA it was a $5 charge on my card when I owned a licensed copy of Vadis and then Vida
This was after making the help desk call about enabling my access to SDM spec vehicles as I was doing work on an embassy car... that the diplomats wife kept filling with petrol

No harm no foul guys. I really appreciate all input since several places have had a crack with no resolution. I'll certainly look into calibration, the kind of juddering I described is definitely new and doesn't really feel like a misfire.

So the dealer says calibration is only for new injectors. If they are used they've been programmed and if the car starts, then no. Hmmm. I'd have thought it was the ECU that gets programmed but apparently not.

It's a calibration code in the ecu it's not like each injector has its own module. On the Japanese stuff like hiluxs you can enter the calibration codes with an aftermarket scan tool but Volvo does it with software. It's not surprising to me that the dealer doesn't understand as they wouldnt fit 2nd hand injectors
