Dear Volvo Gods
I have been collecting parts and information about my b200ft and m46 combo. I am at the stage of choosing between an ipd or kg2t camshaft. I have read that the ipd will pull to 6500 no problem and to retard the timing by 2 degrees. Or the kg2t on the other hand will pull to 7200. In The near ish future I am going to upgrade the exhaust system which I have read the kg2t is good for. I would like to know what power my m46 transmission is capable of withstanding before I start to build the motor.
(Someone talk me out of spending so much on the kg2t please) ;)
Regards Ian

Right now the transmission feels in good condition. I have also read that 10W30 oil is good for old gearboxes such as mine

If your M46 has functioning overdrive and you want to keep it that way, you need to use ATF type F I think.

Ipd cam. More common used as well. Especially with the smaller engine. Advancing more is better in the smaller engines cases. Until you chip it, the car won't rev past 6k anyway.

Thanks Rico I will look into that

So far I have a boost cut chip, boost gauge and intercooler. I am soon to order ipd cam, adjustable cam gear and timing belt all to be done together. Theoretically this should work. I am a bit unsure of the strength of an m46 under pressure. Not many threads on them.

So I suppose there is no point going with a kg2t as I won't ever reach it's full potential

Not with the b200. Replace the idler pulley as well.
M46s blow up third gear generally. It is down to power. But your more likely going to have the clutch slip first. With careful shifting it will last longer.

I would suggest that you should just drive it until it dies. With the sort of mods you're talking about, its lifespan will be more to do with how you drive it than the power you have.
If you haven't caused it grief yet, then it should last fine with the extra power.
Also, as a general rule, American forum talk about power handling capability seems to be based on how much power it can handle forever.
Aussies tend to be more like "if it takes two years to blow up a used part with 300hp, but it will blow up in within a fortnight with 350hp, then it's safe to say that part can handle 300hp".

Haha yeah I get it. I intend to be careful. It's just nice to have power when you need it. Thanks Spac.
I spoke to a bloke today about getting my 2.0 bored out to a 2.3. He said it would be cheaper maybe to buy a second hand block from a b230?? Is that all I need to convert a b200 to b230?

I suppose it's a good time to ask if anyone has these parts to sell? ;)

Oh sorry. Not a gearbox. I am after a b230 cylinder head. I want to convert a 2.0 into a 2.3. I am unsure if I need any other components?

I will keep that in mind though ;) haha

got a b23e available also. 2.3L, but Kjet injection. Block most probably bolts up, but I'm not the most clued up on these things and someone could probably chime in right about now to correct me if im wrong.

I have a B230 you can have for $50. In Sydney.
Vee_Que
If you are going to just put a b230 in, you get a whole motor. It's way not economical. Not a b23, that's not what is suitable for the car. Ideally you get one from a 93 on turbo, but a 93 on non turbo motor will be perfect as well, just a bit more compression.

What VQ said.
Research the power differences between the B200 and B230 - my gut feeling is that the swap won't be worth it for the power difference.

Okay,in that case, I have a complete B230 long block with manifolds and accessories out of an '87 245, you can have the entire thing and wiring and whatever, $100.

Keep in mind it's in a 92' 940...
