Hey guys, I am a recent member of the Volvo family. I had a 2002 S40 turbo for a few months which was a great car so when this 2005 T5 popped up with a blown motor I thought it was worth a chance. It is currently up on blocks in the drive way with the engine and box sitting on the shed floor.
I was lucky enough to be able to pick up another complete parts car, it is a 2006 T5 AWD with 128,000km. It was written off because of water damage but it runs and drives fine based on a couple of laps around the block. Bonus is that it is the same colour as the 2005 as well so I can mix and match panels and doors to get the best outcome.
I am looking forward to getting the replacement engine in and seeing how it all goes. The 320mm brakes from the AWD will be going on and the car already has Bilstiens and Eibach lowered springs. I am going to try and swap over the premium sound but from what I head there can be some issues with the CCF and getting it to work properly.
I also have a ViDA/Dice so if anyone around Sydney needs codes cleared or read let me know. I look forward to learning more about the car and will have a bunch of left over bits for sale ones.
Cheers

Great stuff. Welcome aboard!

Thanks Ash, I will look to get some photos uploaded of the engine swap over the next couple of weeks. I have to say that these things are super easy to work on. I took me less than a day to have the engine out and I was feeling my way around the car, not really sure what to pull off. Having a reasonably low KM parts car is a bonus as the 2005 has 250,000km on the clock.
Is there any value in trying to sell the old motor and box do you think? The engine is 100% complete just has very low compression. I am tempted to pull the head to have a look but living in Sydney I am very space poor so as much as I would love to keep all this stuff for spares it is going to have to go once I have the swap finished.

Snoopy, that is the best offer I have had at the moment.....
I realise that I am probably better off pulling the turbo and some other smaller bits but at this stage I would rather it all just goes. I suppose there is some scrap metal value.
On a side note what is the recommendation on the timing belts on these. The factory is saying 180,000km which based on how often I change cars, I am never going to get to as I have another 50,000k mto do on the replacement engine. Having said that while the engine is out seems to be the perfect time to do it.

No more than 10 years, some like 8

There is nothing in the service history that indicates that it has been done so I guess I will have a look at the condition of the belt. It looks like it has a new Alternator and accessories belt fitted so I might get lucky. Based on what you are saying though it would be overdue given that it is an early 2006 car.
For the sake of $200 it is probably worth doing while the engine is out.

Yes, do it while it's out and the thermostat and CTS as well. Any o rings on supply lines too maybe? Ye never know.... Easier now than later.
Nelpd96
CTS is the Coolant Temp Sensor???? Not something I have come across before.

Yes. Older Whiteblock thing, not 100% sure whether RN motor has it out of the way hidden.
Nelpd96
Righto, certainly worth looking into. The thermostat is easy to get to once you remove the airbox. Dayco kit with Aux belts, idler pully and tensioner is around $230 posted so seems like reasonable value or should I be looking for something cheaper?
timbo
Thermostats and coolant temp sensors are pretty robust on the later motors i have never had to replace them. Definitely worth doing the timing belt while you're there.
R/h hydraulic engine mounts are a pretty common failure on the turbo models so pick the best looking one

Thanks Tim, I will be sure to go over all the bits and check them out. Interestingly both vehicles have got buggered steering rack end on the drivers side.
Do the steering racks tend to wear? Might be a good chance to replace the one in the 250km car with one that has half the KM on it.

Whats wrong with the "blown" motor
Nelpd96
Phila Bear, Low compression is the official diagnosis but I am not sure why. It was low enough that the car didn't want to start when I got it home. At least I hope that is the reason or I am going to be pissed when the new motor goes in. I am tempted to pull the head to see what is going on. There is a split in the radiator hose so I would say the motor got hot and lifted the head. You wouldn't know how bad until you pull the head and check I guess.
I have got the whole engine and box listed on eBay starting at a $1 because I just need it gone. Recouping money on the old engine was never part of the equation.
As an upside, I when and check the part number on the shocks in the car and it appears that I have got a set of B8 Bilsteins in there with lowered Eibach springs. It was almost worth the $1500 for the car just for those.

I wouldn't use dayco belts on these motors fwiw. Parts are available from fcpeuro.com at a reasonable price.

Oem volvo or gates
Nelpd96
I am assuming that the contitech belts listed at fpc euro are ok?
Ex850R
Yes, they seem to be same as Volvo ones.

Kit ordered should be here next week. Looks like I will have to wait to put the motor in but I can swap the brakes and steering rack this weekend so that the car is ready to go.
Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated.
