164 control arm bushes

Hi, new guy here in NZ. My long suffering '73 164 finally needs top and bottom control arm bushes. I know lowers are available but they say you can't replace the top ones ( green book). Has anyone managed to replace them with an alternative ? Would like to keep the old girl going, hope someone can help, cheers Keith.

I have heard you can replace the upper control arm with one from a late 140? And 140 bushings are easier to get hold of. @Rob?

Aren't the upper bushes the same as a 140?

(Ordinarily, I'd check against my parts catalogs... but the hard drive on my desktop machine auto-destructed while I was away in Adelaide and took all my catalogs with it).

IIRC (however I may be wrong), the bushes were different for radial and crossply tyres, but the 140 and 164 shared the same bushes. I also seem to remember that there's something different about the upper wishbone on a 164, but cannot recall what it is exactly without those catalongs.

No, they are not the same.

The 140 upper wishbone and shaft are different - the 140 upper wishbone shaft is male threaded, and the bushes are held on by nuts; with the 164, the wishbone shaft is female threaded, and the bushes are held in place to the shaft by bolts.

164 part numbers for upper wishbone, etc
688022 - wishbone (L) 688023 = wishbone (R)
679246 = shaft
679247 = forward bush
679248 = rearward bush
