  • TD04 Series Turbocharger - Owens MHI TD04 64HTA

I used this hybrid turbo in a Volvo 850 T5 for around 2 years. In that time the vehicle covered around 20,000klms. It ran faultlessly and in my humble and personal opinion is probably the best plug and play (bolt on) turbo upgrade for Volvo Whiteblock engines utilising TD04 series turbochargers. In short, this turbo is a bolt on option for 850/s70/V70 series models.
Having utilized 15g, 19t and 20t turbos in previous builds I can vouch for the performance advantages of this unit.

Based on the 19t turbo, Owens modify this turbo to suit optimum power and torque from the TD04 units. This includes the following
  • 64mm HTA billet alloy compressor wheel
  • Uprated 360 degree thrust bearing
  • Turbine blades cut back for enhanced performance
What that all means is the sudden boost onset is minimized as a result of the clipped turbine blades. Airflow is enhanced due to the upgraded compressor wheel and the 360 degree thrust bearing adds to the durability.

Owen claim that this turbo will suit applications up to 375 bhp. In my instance this turbo was producing around 350bhp, and 500Nm + torque at 4000rpm. Actual dyno HP read 310hp at the wheels. See image.

NOTE - You will need to fit a suitable Wastegate actuator as I utilized this elsewhere. You will also note that it has a Kinugawa CBV blow off valve attached. There is actually a thin blanking plate under this as I was using an aftermarket recirculating blow off valve.

2 years ago this turbo set me back around $1800 AU. Looking for around $800.

I'm located in ACT but more than happy to arrange postage. Feel free to ask questions.

Thanks,

Tim

With standard internals?! Mmmmm doubt it

You can map it to be fine on standard internals
I wouldnt trust standard boost management, its sketchy at best
Absolutely no issue installing this turbo on engine with stock internals. But of course you would want your engine to be in good mechanical tune. The boost onset is more gradual than either 19t or 20t. I was running 20psi through a MBC to produce figures stated on the dyno chart.
The level to which the turbine blades have been clipped would point towards there being very little chance of boost spikes

I'm really surprised that it was rebuilt using the stock 12 blade wheel over the available 9 blade wheel... but the work looks most excellent and the overall price is lower than what even I could build something of the same quality for

(If I didn't have too many spares in the shop already I would have bought this already to put into inventory and sell later for a profit)
Thanks for the heads up @blondejay

After taking my existing 16T to a turbo shop and them saying it seems fine, and reading up on ecu tuning and deciding it wasn't for me juuust yet, I've decided to stick with my existing one. Hopefully I'll be happy with the japanifold, turbine housing and new exhaust for now.

All that said! I'll have a think over the coming days as this could still be a good thing to pick up for a rainy day where I eventually decide to do a turbo upgrade. First stop would be me ostriching a new ecu and getting my car running that with a standard 850R tune and being comfortable with how the whole thing works. If I'm feeling saucey this week and the turbo is still for sale I might make what I'd need to convince myself is an "investment in my future" haha.
