@originalForg yes, Volvo are the kings of arbitrary production line changes half way through a manufacturing year.

My 82' 264GLE had to have a hole drilled too...

From what I have observed, the blanking pates only appeared on all 240's up to 1980. I havent see a blanking plate on a car later than that.

Of course we can't trust Volvo to keep it consistent ... :) ... the car we were installing the auto into was a 1979 GT (had the 14" alloys and externally-adjustable mirrors and vertical front splitter and no spare wheel well).

I wish I'd known sooner, I could have pulled one of the firewall plates from that '80 244GL I had.

Eh, I think its still easier to drill the hole than swap the panel. To remove the panel you have to remove heaps of stuff.

Kicking about somewhere I should have a factory one with the hole. Pulled it to do the manul conversion on my car back 8 years ago but decided to just dril instead.

Except that the clutch is cable rather than hydraulic which males it a fair bit easier, yup, the same.

To be certain I've understood the above, can I ask...

I have a 1991 (1990 on the compliance plate though, I think) 240GL automatic.

1. If I wanted to purchase a donor car, with an M47, what year should I be purchasing - to be sure it has everything needed already on it for the swap?

2. Would it be wise to have the M47 split open and reconditioned before install?

Oh - and the donor car would probably be something cheap and banged up. Do you all think I should put the auto box into it instead, and resell? Or would make just as much without all that effort by just selling the auto gearbox (with 40,000km use on it) separately?

You'll need a drilled flywheel for LH2.4 use, that means 1990 and above.

I will have the correct lh 2.4 flywheel soon. Or I can machine a supplied flat flywheel from someone like berry motor group to suit. In fact, berry is a good place to get all the parts needed.

I’m looking to convert my 1982 245 wagon from auto to manual. A wrecker has offered the following part for the conversion;

Gearbox
Clutch
pilot bearing
throw out bearing
flywheel
reverse light wiring
overdrive wiring
shifter
cross member
clutch master cylinder and lines
pedals

The box he has is a 4spd with OD (M46?), and is still in the car so I can have a quick drive before it rips it out if I do accept his offer.

I’m still new to the Volvo game so is that all the major components I need to do the conversion? Other bits I think I may need are the drive shaft and speedo cable……….?

What are the things to look for on the OD to make sure it’s still good other than when driving, making sure it shifts into OD?

@masternewb you will need the tailshaft too, and I think you'll probably need the speedo cable. You also left the slave cylinder off the list I think.

What year is the car that the parts are coming from?

I did a conversion on my 92 240 recently. Firstly I'd recommend getting the flywheel surface ground before using it. Secondly there are some parts that you should replace with brand new ones. Here are the parts I bought when I did mine:
Overdrive output seal, rubber shifter boot (as the old one was torn), trans shifter bushing, rear main seal, clutch kit, pilot bearing. (The throwout bearing comes with the clutch kit I think...)
I also got some new fluid for the M46 (it uses ATF type F).
I got all this stuff from FCP, the prices were reasonable although it did add up.

Something else to consider is the clutch fork and pivot bolt. I got near-new ones of these for the conversion.

You may even like to consider getting new master and slave clutch cylinders - I wish I did as my master cylinder has developed a small leak. They cost a bit but probably worth it if youplan to keep the car for a while.

I think the OD should just shift in and out smoothly, but also make sure it goes off if you change into 3rd.

the 240 I'm getting the parts off is a 1986.

I'll make sure to add those parts to the list of parts to be removed.
